Border 2: Varun Dhawan To Bring Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya’s 1971 Heroics To Life On Screen

Varun Dhawan will portray real-life war hero Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya in Border 2, joining Sunny Deol and Diljit Dosanjh in Anurag Singh’s patriotic epic.

Varun Dhawan To Play Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya in Border 2

The battlefield is set, and as a new-age star of Bollywood, Varun Dhawan is preparing to play one of India’s greatest war heroes. In the upcoming epic Border 2, directed by Anurag Singh, Dhawan plays Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya, a Param Vir Chakra winner who is most noted for his legendary bravery in the 1971 Indo-Pak war.

While so much of the discussion about Border 2 revolved around Sunny Deol’s comeback as Major Kuldeep Singh Chandpuri, the brave Punjab regiment officer who received national acclaim after the first Border, and Diljit Dosanjh’s performance as Air Force officer Nirmal Singh Sekhon, little was said about Varun Dhawan’s role. Until now, anyway.

Remembering Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya

Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya (later Colonel) is well known for receiving his Param Vir Chakra for his valour and leadership at the Jarpal post in the Shakargarh sector of East Punjab during the 1971 war. Despite suffering serious injuries, he would not let anyone evacuate him, fired the machine gun himself, and moved meaningfully through his fighting men, trench by trench, making the difference and ultimately securing India’s claim to the sector.

Varun Dhawan’s arc in Border 2 starts with Sisana village in Haryana, him leaving Sisana to enlist, through to some of his legendary moments on the battlefield in the war. The role, having both emotional and physical elements, is one of Dhawan’s greatest transformations in career history.

Two Months of Prep, Working With Ex-Army Majors & Hollywood-Scale Action

By the time filming began in January 2025 in Jhansi, Dhawan had spent over two months preparing. He worked with designer Sheetal Sharma on the military look, consulted with ex-Army officers, spent Army Day with real-life heroes, and trained through cardio, weightlifting, and arms training each day.

“Everything was approved by an ex-Army Major, every detail down to badges, down to accurate battlefield regimen,” said one source.

Varun Dhawan’s reported opening sequence has some enormous action piece mapped out by Hollywood stunt pro Nick Powell, who has credits for films like Gladiator, The Last Samurai, etc.

BoxOfficeWorldwide Verdict:

With Border 2, Varun Dhawan is not just donning a uniform—he is donning history. His glamorising of Major Hoshiar Singh Dahiya for the screen is a proud, on-screen commemorative tribute to a real-life legend. Just as the lines of storytelling are being redrawn in Bollywood, this is patriotism with purpose, performance, and punch.
