Raanjhanaa, one of Bollywood’s most debated love stories, hits its 12-year anniversary this year, and the makers are preparing to celebrate it in style. To celebrate, Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor will reunite for a special fan event, and a theatrical re-release is also expected.
Directed by Aanand L. Rai, the 2013 release was as known for its moving A.R. Rahman songs as for its polarising depiction of obsessive love. And now it’s back, this time for the fans who’ve kept the film alive for more than a decade.
Dhanush & Sonam To Reunite, Just for The Fans
Although Dhanush and Sonam Kapoor haven’t worked together since, both will be in Mumbai for a fan event to commemorate the milestone anniversary of Raanjhanaa.
Sonam, who now lives in London with her family, will be flying in just for the event, which will ironically be her rare public appearance since having her baby. Dhanush, who has cultivated a pan-India identity since his Bollywood debut in Raanjhanaa, is returning to the city that took Kundan into the Hindi heartland.
Raanjhanaa: A Microscopic Lens into Love
Released in 2013, Raanjhanaa is widely regarded as both a relatable love story and a love story rife with problematic behaviour.
For fans of films such as 500 Days of Summer (or all you sadists out there who double-dip on The Graduate), many loved Kundan’s story and felt it was painful in just the right way — resonating with the relentless and clinical way unrequited love guts us.
For others, Raanjhanaa was a problematic romanticisation of stalkers and toxic masculinity that can even warp into an emotionally abusive relationship.
Regardless of perspective, it is hard to deny Raanjhanaa‘s cultural impact — whether it be from the song “Tum Tak” becoming a pop culture anthem in India or the tragic arc that made Kundan one of Dhanush‘s most loveable characters.
Could We Get a Spin-Off of Raanjhanaa?
How are we to know if we have a spin-off or a Raanjhanaa 2 in the works?
Fans have speculated forever about a possible Raanjhanaa 2 — and while director Aanand L. Rai had actually said during press in 2013 there would be no Raanjhanaa sequel (due to the inarguably heartbreaking ending), there are even reports saying a spin-off — or even spiritual successor — may not be completely out of the question…
Given the high-profile celebration happening, there’s speculation there might even be an announcement at the fan event, though so far nothing is confirmed.
Whether Swara Bhasker, Abhay Deol or Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub will appear in whatever follows is up in the air…
Box Office Worldwide Verdict
In the current period in film history where franchises and reboots seem to be taking over every aspect of film, Raanjhanaa always seemed to stand out — not because of what it earned, but for how long it would stay in the public conversation.
As it turns 12, the theatrical re-release and cast reunion only add to the inexhaustible nostalgia fans have for Kundan and Zoya. Whether a spin-off gets made or not, this celebration firmly reminds us of how important Raanjhanaa is in the careers of Dhanush, Sonam and Aanand L. Rai.
And yes — Tum Tak might be different this time around seeing it on a big screen.
