The controversy erupted after Sikh groups objected to the verse being recited in a scene where Madhavan’s character is shown smoking, calling the portrayal disrespectful to religious sentiment.
Sikh Anger Mounts Over Sacred Verse In Smoking Scene
The objection centres on a scene in which Madhavan’s character is shown reciting the line “Soora so pehchaniye jo lade deen ke het, purja purja kat mare, kabhoo na chadde khet” while smoking. Members of the Sikh community have called the portrayal offensive, arguing that a revered Gurbani verse should not have been used in such a visual setting.
Shiv Sena leader Gurjyot Singh Keer intensified the backlash after sharing a video on Instagram condemning the sequence and urging the makers to apologise. In his post, he wrote, “Portraying a character, played by R. Madhavan, speaking to Ranveer Singh while smoking a cigarette and reciting the sacred Gurbani… is deeply hurtful and unacceptable.” He added, “This is not just dialogue. It is divine.”
The disputed moment comes during an emotionally charged exchange in which Ranveer Singh’s character, Jaskirat Singh Ranghi, speaks of stepping away and “unite with Waheguru,” only for Madhavan’s character to respond by invoking Sikh valour through the verse. That dramatic intention has done little to calm outrage, with the visual treatment becoming the core of the objection.
Legal Demand Raises The Stakes
As the backlash widened, the focus moved beyond social media outrage to formal demands for action. Keer has called for a “sincere apology” to the SGPC and the Sikh community, while also urging peaceful protest. The demand for an FIR has now raised the pressure on the makers, turning a scene level objection into a legal and public relations flashpoint.
