Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar franchise has already delivered giant worldwide numbers, but its Japan rollout has opened to a distinctly muted response. Despite the two films crossing ₹3,100 crore globally, Dhurandhar managed only 900 admissions on its first day in Japan, a start that left it outside the country’s top 10 Indian opening day performers.
The contrast is hard to miss. A franchise that turned into a box office phenomenon in India and overseas markets has found little early traction in Japan, even with a fairly wide release pattern.
Latest Update
Dhurandhar opened in Japan on July 10 across nearly 80 screens. On day one, it had recorded 449 admissions till 2 pm across 57 locations, but the numbers did not build strongly through the evening. By the end of the day, the total stood at just 900 admissions across 80 locations.
The opening weekend trend stayed soft as well, with the film failing to enter Japan’s top 25 titles on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. That result also meant the Ranveer Singh starrer missed a place among the top 10 Indian films with the highest opening day footfalls in Japan. To enter that list, the film needed to cross Tiger 3, which holds the 10th spot with 1,300 admissions.
At the top of that chart is RRR with 8,230 footfalls, followed by Saaho with 6,510, Kalki 2898 AD with 3,700, Pathaan with 2,220, Salaar with 2,200, Jawan with 1,960, Rangasthalam with 1,610, Devara with 1,550, Baahubali 2 with 1,380, and Tiger 3 with 1,300.
Back in India, the picture has been dramatically different for the franchise. Dhurandhar: The Revenge emerged as one of the biggest Indian theatrical successes, with worldwide collections of ₹1,813 crore. The first Dhurandhar, which was released in December 2025, had also been a major box office winner with more than ₹1,307 crore worldwide. Together, the two films pushed the series beyond the ₹3,100 crore mark globally.
The franchise was written and directed by Aditya Dhar and produced by Aditya Dhar, Lokesh Dhar, and Jyoti Deshpande under Jio Studios and B62 Studios. It stars Ranveer Singh, Akshaye Khanna, Sanjay Dutt, Arjun Rampal, R. Madhavan, Sara Arjun, Rakesh Bedi, Gaurav Gera, and Danish Pandor. The story centres on an undercover intelligence operative navigating a volatile cross border conflict.
Ranveer Singh’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Ranveer Singh’s recent filmography reflects a sharp commercial rebound. Over the last 48 months, his major releases have included Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in 2023, Singham Again in 2024, Dhurandhar in 2025, and Dhurandhar: The Revenge in 2026. Among these, the Dhurandhar films became massive theatrical successes, while Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani marked a solid return in a romantic lead.
As of July 2026, one confirmed upcoming theatrical project in his slate is Don 3. With the Dhurandhar films restoring his box office momentum in a big way, the Japan stumble stands out more as a territory specific miss than a reflection of the franchise’s larger run.
