Sohum Shah Confirms Alia Bhatt’s Pivotal Role In Tumbbad 2, Says The Story Begins From Vinayak’S Son

The world of Tumbbad is officially expanding, and this time, Sohum Shah has put one of the sequel’s biggest talking points on record. The actor-producer has confirmed that Alia Bhatt has a pivotal role in Tumbbad 2, adding a major new layer of intrigue to a franchise that has only grown in stature since its 2018 release.

What makes this reveal especially exciting is that Shah has also shared where the sequel picks up from. Instead of revisiting familiar ground, Tumbbad 2 moves the story forward through Vinayak’s son, opening the door to a fresh chapter in the film’s eerie mythology while keeping its emotional and thematic roots intact.

Alia Bhatt’S Key Part Sets Up Tumbbad 2’S Next Chapter

Speaking about the sequel, Sohum Shah confirmed that Alia Bhatt is an important part of the film and clarified the narrative direction of the follow-up. He said, “Alia Bhatt’s character is pivotal in Tumbbad 2.” He also added, “The story begins from Vinayak’s son.”

That brief but significant update is enough to send fans back into Tumbbad mode. The first film ended on a note that naturally allowed the story to continue across generations, and Shah’s latest statement suggests the sequel will build on that thread rather than simply attempt a repeat of the original’s dread-soaked treasure hunt.

Released in 2018, Tumbbad was directed by Rahi Anil Barve, with Anand Gandhi also credited as director on the film’s overall creative build. Sohum Shah starred as Vinayak Rao and also produced the acclaimed period folk horror film. Backed by Sohum Shah Films, Colour Yellow Productions and Eros International, the film blended folklore, greed and horror with a striking visual language. It earned critical acclaim and later developed a strong cult following. Its combined gross from the original run and 2024 re-release stood at ₹53.46 crore.

A New Generation Reopens Tumbbad’S Dark Inheritance

There has been persistent curiosity around how Tumbbad 2 would expand its world without diluting the original’s atmosphere. By anchoring the next chapter in a new generation, the makers preserve the film’s legacy of inherited greed, fear and consequence. Alia Bhatt’s confirmed involvement also suggests that the sequel is being mounted with clear dramatic ambition, not merely nostalgia for a beloved title.

That makes the announcement feel especially in character for Sohum Shah, whose body of work has consistently leaned toward risk, mood and originality rather than easy mainstream repetition. It also creates a natural bridge into the larger story of where Shah stands today as an actor and producer with a sharply curated screen identity.

Sohum Shah’s Recent And Upcoming Work

In the past few years, Shah has continued to back and headline projects that sit outside the conventional Hindi film playbook. He featured in Sanaa in 2022, a drama led by Radhika Madan, and featured in the 2024 short film Demons. In 2025, he appeared in Crazxy, extending a run of choices that underline his appetite for unusual material and psychologically charged storytelling.

That creative pattern is what gives the Tumbbad 2 update added weight. For Shah, the sequel does not read like a routine franchise extension. It lands more like the next step in a career shaped by atmospheric, challenging narratives, with Tumbbad still standing as the project most closely tied to his identity as both actor and producer.
