Imtiaz Ali‘s latest film, Amar Singh Chamkila, was released on Netflix yesterday on April 12, 2024. Starring Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra in the lead roles, the biographical movie delves into the life of the renowned Punjabi singer, Amar Singh Chamkila. Recently, an intriguing incident about the late singer surfaced on the internet, shedding light on his fascinating encounter with the legendary actress, Sridevi.
According to a report by India Today, Amar Singh Chamkila’s immense popularity and charm captured the attention of none other than Sridevi herself. An old friend of the singer, Sawarn Siviam, revealed that Sridevi was an avid admirer of Amar Singh Chamkila and expressed her desire to cast him as her leading man in a film.
However, Chamkila politely declined the offer, citing his lack of proficiency in Hindi as a hindrance. Despite Sridevi’s insistence and offer to arrange language training for him, Chamkila remained steadfast in his decision, expressing concerns about potential financial losses associated with the training. Despite Sridevi’s subsequent interest in collaborating on a Punjabi film with Chamkila, logistical challenges prevented the project from materialising.
Chamkila’s friend recalled, “Sridevi was a fan of Amar Singh Chamkila. She asked him to be her hero in a film. But he told her, ‘I can’t speak Hindi’. She offered to get him training in the language within a month, but he refused, saying, ‘I will lose Rs 10 lakh in that one month’. Sridevi agreed to do a Punjabi film with him, but it couldn’t happen.”
Amar Singh Chamkila Was A Pleasant Personality
Amar Singh Chamkila was not only a talented singer but also known for his kind-hearted nature, according to a close friend interviewed recently. The friend fondly described Chamkila as a ‘gem of a person’.
Recalling a touching incident from 1986, the friend shared that when Chamkila visited his home and learned of his sick mother, he generously gifted them £10,000, which was a significant sum at the time. The friend emphasized that while many recognize Chamkila for his musical talents, only a select few truly appreciated his generous and caring personality.
