Actress Katrina Kaif was poised to step into the world of superheroes with director Ali Abbas Zafar‘s ambitious project announced in 2019. Titled Super Soldier, the film generated considerable buzz, fueling anticipation among fans eager to see Kaif donning the mantle of a formidable action heroine.

Ali Abbas Zafar has carved a niche for himself in Bollywood by crafting unforgettable action heroes, from an ageing wrestler portrayed by Salman Khan in Sultan (2016) to an indomitable NCB officer played by Shahid Kapoor in Bloody Daddy (2023). However, the question of when we’ll see an action heroine in his films remains unanswered.

In 2019, Zafar teased a superhero film starring Katrina Kaif. Although there was speculation that Super Soldier would be his next project after Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Zafar clarified that the film is currently on hold.

Ali Abbas Zafar Confirms Action Film With Katrina

In a recent interview with Mid Day, Zafar disclosed that he and Katrina are collaborating on an action film script. Praising the skills of Katrina Kaif in action sequences, he expressed their mutual enthusiasm for completing the script at the earliest.

The action genre typically demands a large budget and a grand scale. In an industry where backing films with female leads can be cautious, Zafar emphasises the importance of getting the financial aspects right.

While the success of films like Crew has challenged preconceptions, the stakes for any action film remain high, and Zafar sees his upcoming project as a potential game-changer.

Producing an action film with a female lead comes with its challenges, but the success of Crew has eased some concerns. Zafar acknowledges that box office returns play a crucial role in determining a film’s success, and while he has reservations, he ultimately views filmmaking as a business endeavour.

Shift From Rom-Coms To Action

Zafar, known for his action-packed films in recent years, made his debut in the film industry with the romantic comedy Mere Brother Ki Dulhan in 2011. However, despite his success in action films, Zafar admitted to longing for the days of crafting romantic comedies. He revealed that he hasn’t found the perfect script to dive back into the genre.

In discussions about his shift away from romantic comedies, Zafar expressed his struggle to conjure up stories akin to those of his earlier works. He suggested that in today’s age of social media, the landscape of romance is evolving or, in some cases, diminishing.

Crafting a romantic storyline demands an emotional investment, and Zafar believes that the quality of writing plays a significant role in the success of romantic films. Mere Brother Ki Dulhan, a film portraying the genuine dilemmas of young hearts, was created during a more innocent time, reflecting the authenticity of youthful love.

Ali Abbas Zafar’s Bade Miyan Chote Miyan

Talking about his latest action-packed film, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, made its theatrical debut recently. Starring a star-studded cast including Akshay Kumar, Tiger Shroff, Manushi Chhillar, and Alaya F, the film failed to meet box office expectations.

Although it generated significant buzz before its release, the official numbers shared by the filmmakers touted a worldwide gross of Rs 36 crore on the opening day, omitting specifics about the Indian box office performance. However, as the second day drew to a close, the film witnessed a drastic drop of over 50%, indicating looming challenges ahead.
