Aamir Khan‘s son Junaid Khan made his debut with Maharaj, a historical drama on Netflix India. During a recent interview, Junaid opened up about his journey into films, and addressed the inevitable question of whether being Aamir Khan’s son played a role in him landing his debut film.
Junaid Khan Says He Wouldn’t Have Got Maharaj If He Wasn’t Aamir Khan’s Son
When asked about his acting journey, Junaid acknowledged that being Aamir Khan’s son did come with certain privileges. He told NDTV, “But I will also admit ki if I was not Aamir Khan’s son, I would probably not have gotten Maharaj.” His honesty was well received, earning applause from the audience.
Junaid also shared that he had auditioned for other roles before Maharaj. In fact, he even tried out for a part in his father’s film Laal Singh Chaddha.
Reflecting on the audition process, he said, “Kabhi kabhi kuch part aapko milte hain kuch nahi milte. It is true that Maharaj ke pehle maine kuch auditions diye the. Wo nahi hue uss waqt.”
He added that while his audition for Laal Singh Chaddha impressed his father, the film’s budget and scale required an established actor. “The film was budgeted at a place jahan aap ek naye actor ke saath woh film nahi bana paoge,” Junaid said, explaining why he wasn’t cast for the role despite a strong audition.
Laal Singh Chaddha may not have been Junaid’s launchpad, but Maharaj provided him with the opportunity to showcase his talent. The film, directed by Sidharth P Malhotra and produced by YRF Entertainment, explores the 1862 Maharaj Libel Case, one of India’s most notable legal battles. The plot revolves around the court case and its impact on the country’s social fabric. Junaid stars alongside seasoned actors Jaideep Ahlawat and Shalini Pandey, with a special appearance by Sharvari.
His Debut Film Was Initially Surrounded By Controversy
Yes! We all know that the road to Maharaj was not without challenges. The film’s release was delayed due to legal complications after members of the Vaishnavite Pustimargi sect filed a petition with the Gujarat High Court, expressing concerns about how the film portrayed religious beliefs.
The court temporarily halted the release, which added some suspense to the project’s launch. However, on June 21, the High Court lifted the stay, determining that the film did not target any religious sect. The movie was released the same day on Netflix.
Despite the delay, Maharaj started to gain attention, and Junaid’s performance became a key talking point. Junaid is now set to make his big Bollywood debut alongside Khushi Kapoor in a Hindi remake of the Tamil film Love Today.
