The festive season is here, and with it comes the much-awaited Diwali clash at the box office. This year, two major films, the horror-comedy Thamma and the romantic drama Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat, are set to release on Tuesday, October 21st, to capture the holiday audience. A few weeks later, Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi’s courtroom drama Haq will also hit the screens.
With the countdown officially on, the first-day box office predictions are in. One film is expected to take a big lead, while the other could turn out to be a surprise package. Let’s break down the forecast for these upcoming movies.
Thamma: Horror-Comedy Powerhouse Aims For A Huge Start
The clear frontrunner this Diwali is Thamma. The film is predicted to open in the range of ₹25 crore. A big reason for this strong forecast is its connection to the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU), which has delivered massive hits like Stree 2 and Munjya. Releasing on the day after Diwali is a huge advantage, as it’s traditionally one of the best days for movie business in India. Horror-comedies have a great track record during this period, with films like Golmaal Again and Housefull 4 becoming blockbusters.
However, there are some concerns. While the trailer and music are decent, they haven’t created the massive buzz that was expected. The marketing has also focused more on the dance numbers rather than the film’s core horror and comedy elements, which could affect the initial excitement.
Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat: The Musical Dark Horse
Clashing with Thamma is the musical love story, Ek Deewane Ki Deewaniyat. The film is predicted to have a solid start of ₹5 crore. Its biggest strength is its music, with a couple of songs already becoming very popular. For any love story, hit music is half the battle won. The teaser and trailer have also received a strong response from the youth, who were the same audience that turned films like Sanam Teri Kasam into successes.
The film’s opening day could even surprise everyone and go closer to the ₹15 crore mark if the buzz continues to grow. On the downside, it lacks big stars and might face a tough fight for screens against Thamma. However, if the audience connects with its music and story, it could be the sleeper hit of the season.
Haq: Banking On Strong Content
Arriving a few weeks later on November 7th is Haq, starring Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi. This courtroom drama is predicted to open in the range of ₹4 crore. The film seems to be aimed at an audience that enjoys politically themed movies, a genre that has seen successes like The Kashmir Files and Yami Gautam’s own Article 370.
However, the trend for such films has slowed down recently. Unlike Article 370, which addressed a highly relevant topic, Haq is based on a court case from 1985, which may limit its initial appeal. The film will heavily rely on strong reviews and positive word of mouth to grow its numbers after the first day.
