A classic Bollywood caper is quietly lining up for a modern-day revival, and this time, it is not coming from Rohit Shetty’s camp. As of February 26, 2026, producer Deepak Mukut has confirmed that he is once again developing a new version connected to Do Aur Do Paanch (1980), the Amitabh Bachchan and Shashi Kapoor starrer that remains a fan-favourite for its chaotic humour and mismatched buddy energy.
The clarification lands after weeks of chatter around Shetty’s Golmaal 5 being “inspired by” the 1980 film, a claim the filmmaker publicly denied earlier this month, calling such reports “factually incorrect, misleading, and completely untrue”. Mukut’s update now puts the spotlight back on the original rights holder, and on his long-brewing plan to reimagine the title on his own terms.
The Latest Update
Mukut, who owns the rights to Do Aur Do Paanch, confirmed the project is currently in the scripting stage. He also revealed that this is not a brand-new idea for him, but a plan he had attempted years ago with a specific casting combination in mind.
“A decade ago, I was planning a remake with Kunal Kohli as the director, and Abhishek [Bachchan] and Bobby Deol playing Bachchanji and Shashi Kapoor’s roles [respectively]. At that time, it could not materialise,” Mukut said.
This time, the producer has not locked the format yet, and the film could take multiple creative routes. “I haven’t [decided] whether the movie will be inspired by, a remake, or a sequel to Do Aur Do Paanch. Ideally, I’d like to cast Abhishek and Bobby again as they look great together on screen,” he added.
Mukut also addressed the recent industry buzz around remakes and inspirations, saying he took immediate action once he heard the Golmaal 5 chatter. “I put the notice in a trade magazine, so that no one else can remake or be inspired by it. I own Do Aur Do Paanch’s rights,” he stated.
Abhishek Bachchan’s Recent And Upcoming Work
Abhishek Bachchan has leaned into character-driven parts in recent years, earning praise for films such as Ghoomer (2023) and Shoojit Sircar’s I Want to Talk (2024). On the OTT front, he headlined the ZEE5 drama Kaalidhar Laapata (2025), adding another subdued, performance-first title to his streaming slate.
Bobby Deol’s resurgence has been powered by scene-stealing turns across formats, including Love Hostel (2022) and his much-discussed appearance in Animal (2023). He also remained closely associated with the Aashram franchise, which has been a key pillar of his OTT run.
On the film front ahead, Deol has a confirmed theatrical release with Anurag Kashyap’s Bandar, dated for May 22, 2026, keeping his big-screen momentum active as Mukut’s Do Aur Do Paanch reboot continues to take shape on paper.
