Early Morning Drama At Theatres: Dhurandhar Releases Across India Despite Late Content Delivery And Gaiety Galaxy Deadlock On Release Day

Dhurandhar finally made it to theatres across the country on December 5, but not before creating massive tension and panic among exhibitors. The day was filled with uncertainty, last-minute scrambles, and a major deadlock at one of Mumbai’s most iconic cinema complexes.

There was no clarity on the delivery of content for Ranveer Singh‘s Dhurandhar until the very last moment. The film was in the news on December 4 after the press show got pushed and ultimately cancelled. Many people on the internet tried to create a negative narrative that the makers did this purposely. However, exhibition sources confirmed that there was a technical glitch that led to the cancellation of the media screening. The real issue was something much bigger.

Content Delivered At The Last Minute

Usually, makers provide the film content to theatres a few days before the release. But in the case of Dhurandhar, the content delivery happened in a shockingly late manner. The first half of the film was delivered only on the evening of December 4. The second half arrived early morning on December 5, which is the actual release day.

This created huge panic among theatre owners and exhibitors across the country. In a few cinemas, there was a delay in receiving the content, and hence, the early morning shows did not take place. However, the majority of the early shows did start as scheduled once they received the content. The very first show of the film in the country took place at PVR The Capital Mall in Nalasopara East near Mumbai at 7:15 am. The team at this theatre must have downloaded the content very early in the morning to start the show on time.

Gaiety Galaxy Deadlock Resolved On Release Day

What shocked the industry and trade even more was the fear that Dhurandhar would not release in Mumbai’s iconic G7 multiplex, also popularly called Gaiety Galaxy. The bookings for the film started on Tuesday, and three shows were scheduled in the 1000-seater Gaiety at 12:00 pm, 4:00 pm, and 9:00 pm. Only three shows were scheduled probably due to the long length of the film.

However, soon the booking was suspended. Until Thursday 10 pm, the management of G7 had not started booking in Gaiety or any other cinema hall for Aditya Dhar‘s directorial. This created a huge buzz in the trade circles, as Gaiety Galaxy is one of the most important single screens for any major Bollywood release.

The Deadlock Ends On Friday Morning

Fortunately, the distribution team of Dhurandhar resolved the issue on the morning of December 5. They demanded shows in both Gaiety and Galaxy. The G7 management offered Gaiety as they wanted to continue playing Tere Ishk Mein in Galaxy. The film from last week was doing well in its cinema. But the Jio team firmly demanded shows in both the big cinema halls of the complex. Finally, on Friday morning, their demand was met, and the deadlock ended.
