Beyond a catchy tune, Sapphire is a big cultural, musical moment. This song features Western pop arrangements with Punjabi folk elements such as:
- Arijit Singh’s contribution on a soulful Punjabi verse
- Shah Rukh Khan‘s surprise cameo singing alongside Ed Sheeran
The video, made in a first-person perspective, captures Ed Sheeran on an exploratory journey through India — catching local buses, dancing in cafes in Kolkata, sailing on the Hooghly, and walking through the Baahubali sets in Hyderabad.

Sapphire covers a dynamic range — featuring everything from the chaos of the bylanes of Kolkata to the awe-inspiring phenomenon of Ramoji Film City. One aspect that makes Sapphire notable is these images of India have generally not been seen in world music videos.
“I wanted to write something personal that still felt universal — India gave me that feeling,” he said in a behind-the-scenes cut.
Sheeran and singer Arijit Singh collaborated closely to understand the Punjabi phrasing, which turned out to be a wonderful surprise aspect of the song. What fans did not expect, though, was Arijit’s on-track feature, which made the project even more meaningful.
