Sooraj Barjatya Picks Ayushmann Khurrana as His New-Age Prem in His Eighth Directorial
Veteran filmmaker Sooraj Barjatya is returning with his eighth directorial project, and he has selected Ayushmann Khurrana, the new age Prem, to follow in the rich tradition of Barjatya romantic films. Adding new energy to the film is cast member Sharvari Wagh, who will join the shoot in December 2025, only after shooting begins in November.
Barjatya, an iconic director with hits like Maine Pyar Kiya and Hum Aapke Hain Koun…! under his belt, will be directing a story described as a funny, romantic take on the dynamics of nuclear families, a new paradigm for these types of films, as Barjatya’s previous projects all focused on joint families with the multi-deserving love that they deserved to enjoy.
Sooraj Barjatya’s Next: A Modern Prem For A Modern Era
According to industry sources, the new film is a story with a heavy romantic comedy underlay and will continue with the emotional roots for its core. Ayushman Khurrana will assume the role of Prem; also a reference to Barjatya but one rooted firmly in the sensibilities of 2026.
Sharvari Wagh, last seen in Munjya and Vedaa, will bring a fresh pairing dynamic opposite Ayushmann, who is wrapping up Thama (the vampire comedy) co-starring Rashmika Mandanna and is making no other commitments. Veteran actor Anupam Kher will also play an important role, marking yet another collaboration with Barjatya (after Uunchai).
Film Shoot Schedule and Project Release
- Shooting Starts: November 2025
- Sharvari Enters Schedule: December 2025
- Expected Wrap: Mid-2026
- Target Release Window: Second half of 2026
The film is intended to have a six-month shooting schedule and is currently in advanced casting stages.
Industry Buzz: A New Ayushmann-Barjatya Collaboration
This is a significant step for Ayushmann, who is accustomed to bold, more contemporary roles. Joining Barjatya suggests a possible reimagining as he perhaps becomes a more family-friendly romantic hero. For Sharvari, this is a step up to A-list status after being recognised in some smaller, offbeat films.
Box Office Worldwide Verdict
Sooraj Barjatya’s return with a romantic family drama is already big news — combining Ayushmann as the new-age Prem is a clever move. Combining that with the Gen-Z freshness of Sharvari Wagh, and this could be the family entertainment Bollywood needs in 2026. With a contemporary exploration of nuclear family emotions and clean humour, this project oozes potential — now all eyes will be on the shoot and soundtrack.
