Housefull 5 Day 1 Falls Short: Franchise Fatigue or Formula Overload?
The fifth chapter of India’s highest-grossing comedy franchise — Housefull 5 — is now in cinemas. However, expectations for its Day 1 numbers have fallen a little flat. Even after a large release of 5,000 screens countrywide, the Housefull 5 movie managed a ₹22 crore nett opening, ranking 16th all-time for the highest-grossing Hindi franchise or sequel films.

Housefull 5 may have done more than the previous Housefull 4 (₹17.50 crore), but it is unable to surpass even some action films like Baaghi 2 or comedies like Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, with literally ZERO clash. In addition, it had a cast that has more stars than Housefull 4, along with occupying a prime Friday date.
Star Power Doesn’t Save Franchise Fatigue
The film featured an ensemble cast of more than 20 actors, including Akshay Kumar, Abhishek Bachchan, Riteish Deshmukh, Sanjay Dutt, Nana Patekar, Jackie Shroff, Jacqueline Fernandez, Sonam Bajwa, Nargis Fakhri, and others. However, the roster of A-listers did not equate to the performance they needed to see at the box office.
Insiders in the industry blame the lacklustre opening on:
- Genre fatigue in a slapstick comedy
- Mixed digital buzz
- Backlash against Sajid Nadiadwala productions based on post-Sikandar brand sentiment
- No novelty or appeal in content
This performance follows Sajid Nadiadwala’s last release, Sikandar, which also fell flat at the box office despite an Eid release, with Salman Khan contributing his star power to the film. Although Housefull 5 isn’t a disaster, it raises a red flag for a franchise relying on legacy over originality.
Box Office Worldwide Verdict
When your comedy franchise opens lower than Baaghi 2 or Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, it’s time to revisit more than just the jokes. Housefull 5 is a bigger number than its predecessor, but the impact feels smaller. Audiences are making it clear — legacy doesn’t matter without evolution. Sajid Nadiadwala is on the wrong end of the stick on his second consecutive flick, after Sikandar.
