India’s Biggest Comedy Franchise Housefull 5 Fails To Beat Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava And Salman Khan’s Sikandar At The Box Office

Akshay Kumar’s Housefull 5 opened with ₹24.35 crore nett on Day 1, making it the third biggest opener of 2025 behind Chhaava and Sikandar.

Housefull 5 Opens With ₹24.35 Cr: Strong, But Falls Short of Chhaava and Sikandar

Despite huge pre-release hype, a huge multi-starrer cast, and a solo release without overlapping competition, Akshay Kumar’s Housefull 5 opened with ₹24.35 crore nett on Day 1 — good, but not enough to surpass Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava and Salman Khan’s Sikandar in the top 2 biggest openers of 2025.

The film now sits as the third highest Day 1 grosser of the year and below the expectations generated by the country’s most commercially successful comedy franchise.

Opening Day: The Top 5 Films Of 2025 So Far

Here’s the rundown of Bollywood’s top openers of the year:

Rank Film Day 1 Collection (Nett) Release Day
1 Chhaava ₹33.10 crore Friday
2 Sikandar ₹30.06 crore Sunday
3 Housefull 5 ₹24.35 crore Friday
4 Raid 2 ₹19.71 crore Thursday (Partial Holiday)
5 Sky Force ₹15.30 crore Friday

Despite a solo release, lack of genre competition, and scale, Housefull 5 was not able to generate the same opening euphoria as Chhaava or riding the Salman Khan wave of Sikandar.

Why The Franchise Underperformed Despite Scale

  • Mixed digital response post trailer
  • Lack of strong marketing build-up
  • Genre fatigue as the comedy format has struggled in recent years
  • Negligible festive release benefit

Housefull 5 had plenty of support with the return of Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan and Sanjay Dutt, but the film barely scraped the surface of the historic figures from its predecessors and some of the more recent hits.

Star Power Still Lacking?

The best part is that even Chhaava, headlined by Vicky Kaushal, surpassed even a franchise title, implying that Kaushal has serious box office power. Sikandar, the Salman Khan film, set an astounding ₹30.06 crore opening on a Sunday, attesting to Khan’s otherworldly star power.

What’s Next for Housefull 5?

Onwards and upwards potentially for Housefull 5 with decent word-of-mouth across single screens and family audiences, leaving chances to grow over the weekend — the big benchmark will be Monday. If it has double-digit figures on Monday, it could still scrape together a hit decision.

Box Office Worldwide Verdict

Housefull 5 has opened below expectations in spite of bearing the Plack, India’s most iconic comedy brand. No doubt Akshay Kumar, as the face of the film, had excellent comic timing; the ensemble appeal and family-appropriate humour created at least some audience attendance, but the box office numbers tell a tale, and it’s obvious — audiences in 2025 really do want something different over something familiar.

When Kaushal’s Chhaava in the film is the year’s leader and garment, followed with Sikandar right behind, the reversal in stardom and associated storytelling happens here.
