Emergency: SGPC Slaps Legal Notice On Makers & Kangana Ranaut – Will She Apologise & Remove ‘Anti-Sikh’ Scenes?

Emergency faces controversy as SGPC issues a legal notice demanding removal of anti-Sikh scenes and an apology from Kangana Ranaut.

Kangana Ranaut‘s upcoming film Emergency has landed in hot water even before its release. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has issued a legal notice to Ranaut and the film’s producers, accusing them of distorting Sikh history and spreading harmful stereotypes.

SGPC Demands Apology & Removal Of Objectionable Scenes From Emergency Trailer

The SGPC, which manages historical Gurdwaras, has demanded the immediate removal of certain scenes they find objectionable, as well as an apology from the filmmakers.

The controversy stems from the film’s recently released trailer, which has sparked outrage within the Sikh community.

The trailer, which dropped on 14 August, shows scenes that the SGPC claims misrepresent Sikhs as terrorists and separatists.

SGPC Secretary Partap Singh didn’t mince words when expressing his concern. As per a report from The Hindu, he stated, “The movie trailer reveals several anti-Sikh scenes which have deeply hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community. An attempt has been made to show Sikhs as terrorists and separatists, which is unacceptable and far from the truth.”

The Committee Also Demands Trailer To Be Taken Down From All Public Platforms

The SGPC is not only calling for the removal of these scenes but is also pushing for the entire trailer to be pulled from all public and social media platforms.

They argue that the film’s content could potentially damage the social fabric and incite communal tensions, particularly in Punjab. The SGPC has made it clear that if their demands are not met, they will pursue further legal action against the film’s creators.

Adding to the drama, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The PIL seeks to revoke the certification granted to Emergency, arguing that the film poses a threat to social harmony and could lead to unrest.

The petitioners claim that the film unjustly vilifies the Sikh community, portraying them in a negative light that could have serious repercussions for the already sensitive social environment in Punjab.

Will Emergency Makers Comply To SGPC’s Demands?

Emergency, directed by and starring Kangana Ranaut, is a political drama centred around the events of the 1975 Emergency in India. The film has been the subject of much discussion since its announcement, with Ranaut portraying former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The SGPC’s legal notice and the PIL have only added to the film’s already controversial nature.

As of now, neither Kangana Ranaut nor the other producers of Emergency have made any public statements in response to the legal notice or the PIL. It remains to be seen whether they will comply with the SGPC’s demands or face legal consequences.

This situation puts Emergency in a precarious position, with its release potentially hanging in the balance. The question on everyone’s mind now is: Will Kangana Ranaut and her team address the concerns raised by the SGPC, or will they stand their ground and risk further backlash?
