A major legal battle has erupted in Bollywood! Eros International Media Ltd has filed a massive Rs 84 crore lawsuit against filmmaker Aanand L Rai at the Bombay High Court. The production company has accused Rai of illegally projecting Tere Ishk Mein as a spiritual sequel to their 2013 hit Raanjhanaa without permission.
The lawsuit has named multiple parties including Colour Yellow Media Entertainment LLP, T-Series, writer Himanshu Sharma and Netflix.
What Is The Case About
According to the complaint filed by Eros, they are the exclusive owners of all intellectual property rights related to Raanjhanaa. This includes copyright, registered trademarks, character rights for Kundan Shankar and Murari, as well as remake, prequel and sequel rights.
Eros claims that the defendants misused these rights to market Tere Ishk Mein, which released on November 28, 2025. The company is now demanding Rs 84 crores as compensation for the alleged damages.
Teaser Used Raanjhanaa Branding
A major trigger for the lawsuit was the teaser of Tere Ishk Mein that appeared online in July 2025. Eros found that the teaser used phrases like “From the world of Raanjhanaa” and hashtags such as “#WorldOfRaanjhanaa” to promote the film.
The interim application states that the teaser even used footage, background score and music from Raanjhanaa. This was done despite Eros not owning the music rights anymore.
Same Actor Playing Similar Character
One of the strongest allegations involves actor Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub. He played a character named Murari in both films. Eros claims that the character in Tere Ishk Mein is almost identical to his role in Raanjhanaa.
The company also alleges that Dhanush’s character Shankar in Tere Ishk Mein mirrors Kundan Shankar from Raanjhanaa. Similar emotional arcs, dialogues and themes have reportedly been used in the new film.
Legal Notices Were Ignored
Eros issued a cease and desist notice on July 25, 2025, followed by reminders in September. While some references were briefly removed from promotional material, the film still released with strong similarities. Despite receiving explicit legal notices, the makers proceeded with the theatrical release on November 28, 2025.
