Excel Entertainment’s BAFTA-Winning Boong Announces March 6 Theatrical Re-release With Wider Rollout

A rare international win has turned into a fresh big screen moment for Indian indie cinema. Just days after making history at the British Academy Film Awards, Lakshmipriya Devi’s Boong is heading back to theatres with a wider rollout, giving audiences across India another chance to experience the Manipuri-language coming-of-age drama on the big screen.

Backed by Excel Entertainment along with Chalkboard Entertainment and Suitable Pictures, the film’s renewed theatrical push arrives on the back of a milestone that has instantly placed Boong in a very small, very prestigious club.

The Latest Update

The makers have announced that Boong returned to cinemas on March 6, 2026, this time with a wider release. A new poster was also unveiled to mark the date.

Along with the poster, the team shared a caption that underlines the film’s emotional pull and its newly minted global standing: “A journey of innocence, love and resilience. Witness India’s first BAFTA Award winning film, in cinemas on 6th March.”

The re-release news follows the film’s BAFTA triumph, where Boong won in the Best Children’s and Family Film category, becoming the first Indian feature to take home the honour in that category.

What Boong Is About And Why The BAFTA Win Matters

Written and directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, Boong tracks a young boy who decides to surprise his mother with what he believes is the most meaningful gift possible, bringing his absent father back home. What begins as a child’s earnest quest slowly reshapes into a deeper understanding of family, longing, and the weight of expectations.

The film stars Gugun Kipgen in the title role, with Bala Hijam, Angom Sanamatum, Vikram Kochhar, Hamom Sadananda, Jenny Khurai, and Nemetia Ngangbam also featuring in key parts. Produced by Excel Entertainment, Chalkboard Entertainment and Suitable Pictures, the film’s BAFTA win has brought major international visibility to a story rooted in Manipur and told through a child’s gaze.

With the March 6, 2026 wider release now locked, the film’s return to theatres turns that global recognition into a direct invitation for Indian audiences to catch up with a celebrated title on the big screen.
