Bollywood directors embrace remaking South Indian films and these films generate a lot of money at the box office as well. Surprisingly, in recent years, directors from the South have begun reworking their films in Hindi. Actors including superstars from Bollywood are enthusiastic about starring in remakes. From Akshay Kumar to Salman Khan, every actor is keen on headlining a South remake except Shah Rukh Khan.
Let’s take a look at the stars that have appeared in multiple South Indian remakes to date.
Akshay Kumar, who is one of Bollywood’s biggest stars has starred in several blockbuster films, and you may be surprised to learn that many of them, especially after 2000, were Hindi remakes of South Indian films, such as Hera Pheri, Rowdy Rathore, Holiday, and others. His recent release Laxmmi was also a remake of the South film Kanchana. Even his upcoming flick Bachchan Pandey seems to be a remake of the Tamil film, Jigarthanda.
Following Akshay Kumar on the list is Ajay Devgn, who has also appeared in many South remakes. Singham, Son Of Sardaar, Singham Returns, and Drishyam, among the actor’s films, were remakes of South Indian films. Ajay is unquestionably one of the actors who would be ideal for the remakes only now.
The list also includes Bollywood superstar, Salman Khan, whose career was boosted by the release of Wanted in 2009, which made him a popular choice among the general public for massy entertainers. However, Wanted was a remake of the South Indian film Pokiri, and Salman went on to star in other South Indian remakes such as Ready and Bodyguard. Salman’s recent flicks haven’t done well at the box office; perhaps a South remake could help him resurrect his career. He is currently in talks for the Hindi remake of Tamil blockbuster Master which starred Thalapathy Vijay in the lead role.
Out list will be incomplete if we don’t involve Shahid Kapoor in it. Shahid is poised to star in yet another South remake after scoring his biggest solo hit with Kabir Singh, a version of Telugu film Arjun Reddy. He will appear in the remake of Jersey, in which he will play a cricketer.
South remakes appear to be a hit among Bollywood celebs, but Shah Rukh Khan seems to be eschewing the trend. The superstar continues to believe in new stories, demonstrating his willingness to take risks. Even though his most recent films did not receive positive reviews from critics and audiences, Bollywood’s Badshah is working hard to provide new content for his fans and followers.
