Exclusive: Why Directors Are Way More Important In Post Pandemic Larger Than Life Cinema Era And Pathaan Proves It, Analysis Of Big Films And Directors !

Cinema always been director’s medium and theatre/drama always been actor’s medium. But sadly most of the cinema rides on back of actors/superstars who can sell films and bring audience inside cinema. Pandemic divided films in two parts: larger than life cinema on big screen for which audience is eager to pay premium price and on smaller scale content driven cinema which can be consumed on ott smaller screen.

Blockbuster success of ‘Pathaan’ proved that a director like Siddharth Anand who can deliver larger than life entertainment is what audience need. Big action set piece, Chartbuster music and exotic locales coupled with superstars and your blockbuster entertainment is ready. Somewhat ‘Brahmastra’, ‘Bhool Bhulliaya 2’ cemented this fact.

Last week Kartik Aryan’s ‘Shehzada’ tanked at box office without a trace and it was Rohit Dhawan as director which failed primarily than actor Kartik. ‘tu Jhoothi Main Makkar’ will be test of Luv Runjan who has fantastic box office record as Ranbir Shraddha will ensure good opening.

Similarly Raj Mehta made a good family comedy ‘Good News’ but can he deliver a larger than life entertainment, one doubts that! ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’ is Farhad Samji film and many will argue that Salman Khan can pull off anything but lifetime biz will tell story of director’s ability.

Ajay Devgn has very mixed record as director at box office and that is main concern with ‘Bholaa’. Film will open good due to massy content, interesting teaser and previous success of ‘Drishyam 2’ but can it become 250 cr nett film, tike will answer the question. Ajay directs these VFX heavy stylish films but content goes haywire and one hopes this time it will not be the case.

Big Upcoming Films & Their Directors:

Pathaan: Sidharth Anand

Shehzada: Rohit Dhawan

Bholaa: Ajay Devgn

Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan: Farhad Samji

Jawan: Atlee

Tiger3: Maneesh Sharma

Dunki: Rajkumar Hirani

Adipurush: Om Raut

Bade Miya Chote Miyan: Ali Abbas Zafar

Bawaal: Nitesh Tiwari

Aashiqui 3: Anurag Basu

Satya Prem Ki Katha: Sameer Vidwans

Yodha: Sagar Ambre, Pushkar Ojha

‘Jawan’ has a director in Atlee who has proven track record down south in massy films and SRK with so many talented actors seems like a good box office bet. ‘Dunki’ has most successful director of Bollywood Rajkumar Hirani that too Christmas release period and that’s why records will be broken.

Though ‘Tiger 3’ has franchise advantage and now ‘Pathaan’ has made spy universe as biggest Indian franchise. But film is directed by Maneesh Sharma who gave romantic hits in ‘Band Baaja Baraat’ and ‘Shudh Desi Romance’ big faltered with thriller action adventure ‘Fan’. So film will depend upon Salman Khan and Aditya Chopra.

‘Aashiqui 3’ seems like a perfect mix – young cast and Anurag Basu is master of shooting great musical films (‘Barfi!’, ‘Life In A Metro’ and ‘Murder’). Similarly ‘Bawaal’ can be ideal box office bet for Varun Dhawan after subdued films as Nitesh Tiwari has mind blowing record regarding content.

In nutshell when next ‘Shehzada’ tanks then remember the name of director as star can only bring initial. Choosing top director with right genre fit is utmost important. Stars can bring lot of social media noise among fans but ground level reality is hard.
