Farhan Akhtar Joins Sam Mendes’ Beatles Films As Ravi Shankar, Release Locked For 2028

Farhan Akhtar is stepping into one of the most culturally significant crossovers in modern music history. The actor filmmaker has officially been cast as sitar maestro Ravi Shankar in Sam Mendes’ upcoming four film Beatles project, an ambitious theatrical event that will unfold across four standalone movies.

The casting places Farhan Akhtar at the heart of a story that connects Indian classical music to the global pop revolution of the 1960s. Shankar’s influence on George Harrison famously shaped The Beatles’ evolving sound, making this role more than a cameo. It is a pivotal thread in the band’s creative journey.

Farhan Akhtar Cast As Ravi Shankar In Beatles Four Film Event

Sony Pictures confirmed Akhtar’s involvement in the international project. The official social post announcing the latest casting additions stated: “New casting announced for The Beatles – A Four-Film Cinematic Event, directed by Sam Mendes. Farhan Akhtar will star as Ravi Shankar.”

Akhtar will portray the legendary musician who introduced Harrison to Indian classical music and the sitar, a meeting that would ripple through The Beatles’ work during their most experimental period. With Mendes aiming to tell a definitive version of the group’s story, Shankar’s presence is expected to spotlight the artistic exchange that helped expand mainstream Western music’s palette.

Sam Mendes’ Beatles Films: Four Stories, One Cinematic Plan

The Beatles project is designed as four separate feature films, each told from the perspective of one band member. Together, the films will chart the group’s rise, their cultural dominance, and the eventual breakup in 1970.

A key creative cornerstone is that the filmmakers have secured both life story and music rights, allowing the movies to incorporate the band’s songs and portray major real life moments with deeper authenticity. The entire four film slate is scheduled for a theatrical rollout in April 2028.

Main Cast And Expanded Ensemble Revealed

Alongside Farhan Akhtar, the central quartet has been announced with Paul Mescal as Paul McCartney, Harris Dickinson as John Lennon, Barry Keoghan as Ringo Starr, and Joseph Quinn as George Harrison.

The supporting cast also brings in major names set to portray figures integral to the Beatles’ personal lives and inner circle. The same official casting announcement also included Lucy Boynton as Jane Asher, Morfydd Clark as Cynthia (Powell) Lennon, and Harry Lawtey as Stuart Sutcliffe.

For Akhtar, the project marks a high profile international acting assignment, placing him in a prestige ensemble built around one of the most documented legacies in entertainment. The challenge will be to capture Shankar’s stature with nuance, especially given the musician’s global recognition and deep artistic influence.
