Gadar – Ek Prem Katha (2001) remains ingrained in memory not just for its gripping content, but also for its unparalleled box office achievements. The film featuring Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel took its time to surpass previous records and establish groundbreaking new ones. In contrast, Gadar 2 has swiftly begun setting records within the first three days of its release. The tremendous demand for the movie has prompted numerous theaters to introduce post-midnight and early-morning screenings. This phenomenon has become a regular occurrence in Mumbai, where films like Sooryavanshi (2021), Gangubai Kathiawadi (2022), Drishyam 2 (2022), and most recently Oppenheimer (2023) have all embraced late-night shows. Notably, this trend has also caught on in smaller towns and centers this time.
On this Sunday, August 13, Cinestar Multiplex has scheduled screenings of Gadar 2 at 1:00 AM and 5:30 AM. Concurrently, Entertainment Paradise will present the film at 1:15 AM. According to reliable sources, this marks a historic occasion at Entertainment Paradise, as it’s the first instance of screening a movie so late in its extensive history.
In the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar region, several theaters including AB Miniplex, Sanelite Cinemas, Connplex Smart Theatre – Maninagar, Connplex Smart Theatre – Prahladnagar, Miraj City Pulse, Rajhans Cinemas – Vastral, Miraj Cinemas – Vitthal Plaza, Banana Smartplex, and Mango Plus Cinemas, have slotted screenings between 12:05 AM and 2:00 AM.
In Surat, The Friday Cinema will showcase Gadar 2 at 1:15 AM. Kiritbhai T Vaghasia, the operator of The Friday Cinema multiplex, mentioned, “Usually, I set showtimes at 11:58 or 11:59 PM to avoid confusion for moviegoers, as they might not realize the change of day after midnight. However, for Gadar 2, due to full bookings, I’ve opted for a 1:15 AM show. It brings back memories of the frenzy during KGF – Chapter 2 (2022).”
In Surat, Inox Raj Imperial has achieved a remarkable feat by deciding to screen Gadar 2 continuously for 24 hours. Unlike most theaters that offer post-midnight shows on only 1 or 2 screens, this multiplex has gone above and beyond by featuring Gadar 2 across all 6 screens! In the time span from 12 AM to 8 AM, a total of 13 showings of this action-packed film are scheduled.
Several other theaters are also joining the trend of screening Gadar 2 after midnight. For instance, Moviemax – Cinemagic in Bikaner, Rajasthan, will host a showing at 12:45 am. In Sikar, Rajasthan, Miraj Cinemas Bioscope has planned screenings at 1:30 AM and 6:50 AM, while Cine Wheels Drive In By Windasa in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, will present the film at 1:15 AM. The list of participating theaters continues to expand with each passing hour.
According to a source within the exhibition industry, there is a growing consideration among exhibitors to incorporate late-night or early-morning screenings. The movie is encountering challenges related to limited capacity due to having to share screens with another film, OMG 2. However, audience members are displaying an eagerness to avoid waiting until weekdays or the following week to experience Gadar 2. Their immediate desire to watch the film is expected to lead to a surge in additional cinema venues offering more showtimes, consequently making a significant impact in terms of historical precedent.
