The film Gadar – Ek Prem Katha, which was released 22 years ago, continues to hold a special place in people’s hearts due to its thrilling action sequences, captivating storyline, intense drama, emotional depth, memorable music, and the exceptional performance by Sunny Deol. It remains one of the greatest successes in Indian cinema, adding to the allure of Anil Sharma’s directorial venture.
This year, the anticipation surrounding Gadar – Ek Prem Katha has escalated even further as its sequel, Gadar 2, is set to hit the screens during Independence Day week. In light of this, Zee Studios, the producers, have made the decision to re-release Gadar – Ek Prem Katha during its 22nd anniversary week, after undergoing an extensive remastering process costing Rs. 2 crores. Notably, the new print also includes an exclusive scene that was never exhibited in theaters, omitted from the film’s DVD, and absent in its televised screenings.
Additional Scene And Dialogues In Re Release Of Gadar
We have obtained exclusive information regarding a particular scene in Gadar – Ek Prem Katha. This newly revealed scene has a duration of 50 seconds and appears towards the end of the film. It involves a supporting character making a humorous dialogue reference to Tara Singh (Sunny Deol), mouth the dialogue, “Damad hai woh Pakistan ka. Usse nariyal do, usse tikaa lagao.” The dialogue ends with the comic one-liner, “Dahej mein Lahore le jaayega”.
The original version of Gadar – Ek Prem Katha had a runtime of 190 minutes, equivalent to 3 hours and 10 minutes. With the inclusion of the aforementioned scene and the logos of Zee Studios, Zee Music Company, Zee5, and Zee Cinema, the re-released version has been extended to a runtime of 192.45 minutes. In simpler terms, the re-released version of Gadar – Ek Prem Katha has a total duration of 3 hours, 12 minutes, and 45 seconds.
We have also obtained the list of edits requested by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) during the initial release of Gadar – Ek Prem Katha in 2001. The dialogues “Mil baant ke” and “Chaabi ghumayenge” were removed from the film. Additionally, two offensive words uttered by Amrish Puri’s character, namely “Bhangan” and “Bastard,” were eliminated, along with the words “Haram” and “Haramzada” spoken by the characters of Kazi and Khan respectively. Furthermore, the terms “Kafir” and “Kaum” were also cut from the film at two different instances.
The iconic hand pump lifting scene performed by Tara Singh in Gadar – Ek Prem Katha is widely recognized and revered. However, the scene would have been slightly longer if not for the intervention of the CBFC. In the original version, the action sequence concludes with Tara thrusting the hand pump into a person’s stomach, but this particular shot was considered excessively violent and subsequently removed. It was replaced with reaction shots depicting the characters’ responses to Tara Singh’s actions. Additionally, two other visuals, one featuring a headless body and another showcasing a character being struck by a rifle knife, were also omitted from the final cut.
Following these alterations, the CBFC granted the certificate to the film’s creators on May 30, 2001.
Aside from Sunny Deol, Gadar – Ek Prem Katha also featured Ameesha Patel and Utkarsh Sharma in prominent roles. Interestingly, all three actors will also be part of the sequel.
