Mumbai’s Iconic Gaiety-Galaxy Temporarily Shuts Down After Licence Issue Halts All Shows

Mumbai moviegoers woke up to an unexpected jolt on September 7 as Gaiety-Galaxy, the city’s most storied mass circuit cinema hub, stopped all screenings after a licence issue halted operations across the complex. The Bandra landmark, better known as G7 Multiplex, has long been one of the first places where the pulse of a big Hindi film is truly felt, which is why the shutdown has sparked immediate concern across the exhibition trade and among regular patrons.

Latest Shutdown Update

Narendra Gupta also shared the notice on Instagram and stated that the complex had been shut over non-renewal of its licence, adding to the swift spread of the update across film and exhibition circles in Mumbai.

The Mumbai police notice displayed outside the cinema said further shows had been stopped, and the visible Marathi text indicated that screenings would remain halted until the matter was resolved. The notice was marked in the name of Bandra Police Station.

The Marathi notice reads: “सदर चित्रपट गृह यांनी लायसन्सचे नुतनीकरण न केल्याने त्यांचे पुढील शो बंद करण्यात आले आहे.
वांद्रा पोलीस ठाणे” (Since this cinema has not renewed its licence, all further shows have been stopped/closed. Issued by: Bandra Police Station.)

By Monday, September 7, the theatre was not running shows, turning a local administrative issue into one of the day’s biggest talking points in the city’s cinema business.

That response stems from what Gaiety-Galaxy represents. A shutdown here is never viewed as just another operational pause, because this is one of those rare Mumbai theatres whose identity is tied to the public life of Hindi cinema itself.

Why Gaiety-Galaxy Matters To Mumbai Movie Culture

Located in Bandra West near the station belt, Gaiety-Galaxy built its reputation on accessibility, strong footfalls and a viewing atmosphere that gave mainstream releases a distinctly electric edge. Its popularity has also made it a regular stop for film stars and industry insiders looking to witness how audiences respond on the ground.

The complex traces its origins back to November 24, 1972, when Seeta Aur Geeta was its inaugural film. Over the years, it expanded from its original theatres, Gaiety, Galaxy and Gemini, into the larger G7 identity that became synonymous with old-school theatrical fervour in Mumbai. For generations of filmgoers, the venue has stood as a symbol of the city’s enduring single-screen culture even as the exhibition business evolved around it.

The immediate focus is now on completing the licence renewal process so the cinema can resume operations. For an exhibition property with such deep roots in the Hindi film business, even a short halt carries outsized attention because of the venue’s symbolic and commercial value.
