Mohanlal is stepping into one of his most politically charged big-screen worlds yet. The Malayalam superstar’s 367th film with National Award-winning director Vishnu Mohan has now been officially titled Operation Ganga, instantly marking it out as a large-scale action drama rooted in India’s evacuation mission from war-hit Ukraine.
Operation Ganga Draws From India’s Ukraine Evacuation Mission
The newly unveiled title gives the film an immediate real-world anchor. Operation Ganga takes its name from the 2022 rescue mission launched to bring Indian citizens home after the Russia-Ukraine war erupted, a chapter that remains one of India’s most closely watched overseas evacuation efforts in recent memory.
That backdrop gives the Mohanlal starrer a scale rarely attempted in mainstream Malayalam cinema. Rather than leaning on fictional geopolitical intrigue, the film appears to be drawing from a mission that carried both national urgency and international stakes, giving the title reveal a stronger impact than a standard first-look announcement.
Backed by Sree Gokulam Movies, the project is being mounted as a pan-Indian film, and the choice of subject immediately broadens its appeal beyond a regional market. The title alone signals a story designed around rescue, conflict and national resolve, all while placing Mohanlal at the centre of an unusually high-stakes narrative.
Ensemble Cast And Technical Team
The film’s cast reflects that ambition. Mohanlal leads the project, with Arjun Rampal, Bhagyashri Borse, R. Parthiban and Adil Hussain in key roles. Arjun Rampal’s inclusion is particularly notable because it adds a wider Hindi market presence to a film already conceived on a national canvas.
Vishnu Mohan, who won the National Film Award for Best Debut Film of a Director for Meppadiyan, is taking on a much bigger scale here. The film is produced by Gokulam Gopalan under the Sree Gokulam Movies banner, with Baiju Gopalan and V. C. Praveen as co-producers and Krishnamoorthy as executive producer.
The technical roster points to a slick theatrical package. Miroslaw Kuba Brozek is handling cinematography, Rajeevan is the production designer and Shameer Mohammed is on editing. Sea Young Oh has been brought in for action, while Shashwat Sachdev is composing the music. The crew also includes sound designer Bishwadeep Chatterjee, VFX supervisor K. V. Sanjit, military advisor Sqn Ldr Varlin Panwar, costume director Melvy J, makeup artist Ronex Xavier and production controller Rinny Divakar.
