Varun Dhawan’s next big-screen outing may arrive sooner than expected. Box Office Worldwide has exclusively learned that Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is being lined up for a May 22, 2026 release, moving ahead from its previously announced June 12 date and instantly turning one of the season’s lighter entertainers into a major talking point. Film had stellar cast as Varun Dhawan set to romance Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde in the film.
The shift gives the film an earlier jump into the summer holiday corridor, a space that often works well for glossy, music-led Hindi crowd-pleasers. It also places the David Dhawan directorial in the middle of a far more interesting box office frame, with Karan Johar’s Chand Mera Dil and Anurag Kashyap’s Bandar also eyeing the same date.
May 22 Release Sets Up A Three-Way Clash
This is the second date change for Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai. The film was first slated for June 5 before moving to June 12 after Toxic took over the June 4 slot. The latest plan pushes it further ahead and gives the makers a commercially attractive window before the June rush intensifies.
The move also reflects a smart release calculation. By stepping away from the June traffic, the film avoids a direct overlap with Imtiaz Ali’s Main Vaapas Aaunga, starring Diljit Dosanjh, Sharvari and Vedang Raina. At the same time, it now walks into a fresh contest on May 22, where exhibitors will be watching closely as Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, Chand Mera Dil and Bandar compete for screens and opening weekend momentum.
Produced by Ramesh Taurani’s Tips Films, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai also marks an important title for the banner as it returns to film distribution. The cast features Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur in the lead, with Maniesh Paul, Mouni Roy and Kubbra Sait in key supporting roles. Positioned as a mainstream entertainer rooted in David Dhawan’s signature comic style, the film is clearly aiming for a wide family audience.
That bigger release conversation also feeds directly into where the film sits in Varun Dhawan’s current career lineup.
Why This Release Matters To Varun Dhawan
For Varun Dhawan, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai is more than just another date move on the calendar. It is one of his key theatrical plays at a time when his slate is balancing both cinema and streaming visibility. He was seen in the theatrical release Baby John, which reached cinemas on December 25, 2024, and in the Prime Video series Citadel: Honey Bunny, which premiered in November 2024. He had cameo in Thamma released on Diwali 2025.
His last theatrical release Border 2, kept him firmly in the mainstream commercial space with super hit box office business. In that context, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai becomes an important test of his appeal in a crowded season, especially with a classic David Dhawan comedy entering a release frame that now promises one of early summer’s most closely watched Hindi box office battles.
