Hansal Mehta is defending Ibrahim Ali Khan and Khushi Kapoor after their film Nadaaniyan faced harsh criticism. The Netflix film (which premiered on March 7) failed to impress critics and viewers. Social media quickly turned into a battleground, with trolls attacking the young actors for their performances.
Hansal Mehta Supports Ibrahim-Khushi Amid Poor Response To Nadaaniyan
Mehta is now asking people to be more considerate. In a recent interview with ETimes, he criticised the brutal trolling, saying such comments can be “traumatising” for young actors.
He pointed out that their famous parents also had awkward debuts. But back then, they didn’t have to face social media backlash.
“Filmmakers Should Take Responsibility”
The director believes the real problem is within the industry. He slammed certain filmmakers for casting untrained actors based on their family connections instead of their talent. Mehta stressed that producers must ensure their cast is ready for the roles they take on.
Ibrahim (son of Saif Ali Khan and Amrita Singh) and Khushi (daughter of the late Sridevi and Boney Kapoor) come from Bollywood royalty. But Mehta thinks that should not be the only reason to launch them. He said, “It is unfair to choose performers based on their family tree.”
Mehta also blamed the advisors guiding these young actors. He shared an experience where he approached a star kid for a project, but their advisors pushed for a more traditional debut – one with hit songs and a grand launch. He argued that these advisors are stuck in the past, still hoping for a Hrithik Roshan or Tiger Shroff-style debut. But the industry has changed.

According to Mehta, young actors should focus on earning respect through their work instead of waiting for a big production house to launch them. He said he enjoyed talking to them and found them insightful. However, he felt disappointed that their choices did not reflect their own views.
The filmmaker also criticised the media culture around star kids. He pointed out that their training seems to come more from constant paparazzi attention rather than real film sets.
Nadaaniyan was Khushi Kapoor’s third project after The Archies and Loveyapa. Meanwhile, the film marked Ibrahim’s official Bollywood debut.
