Hindi Film Industry Sees 13% Drop In Business In 2024; Only 4 Bollywood Releases In Top 10 Indian Movies Including Stree 2 & Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3

In 2024, Hindi cinema faced a 13% decline in box office earnings, with fewer releases and increased competition from regional and international films.

Hindi cinema had a rough 2024 with a noticeable 13% drop in box office collections. The total collections for Hindi films fell from ₹5,380 crore in 2023 to ₹4,679 crore. Hindi cinema’s share in the Indian box office also decreased, from 44% to 40%, showing increased competition from regional industries and a struggle to maintain its dominance.

Despite this, the Indian box office grossed ₹11,833 crore in total, making it the second-highest-grossing year, just behind 2023, which had ₹12,226 crore in collections. However, the reduction in Hindi cinema’s revenue is a concerning trend, with fewer films hitting the ₹500 crore mark.

Key Factors In This Major BO Share Drop

One of the key factors contributing to this drop is the reduction in the number of releases in 2024. There were weeks, including major holidays like Gandhi Jayanti, with no films hitting theatres. Experts point out that this issue of empty release windows has had a significant impact on overall collections, leaving audiences without much choice during some periods.

The struggle also comes from Hindi cinema’s increasing reliance on dubbed versions of South Indian films. These films, such as Pushpa 2: The Rule and Kalki 2898 AD, have contributed heavily to box office earnings, making up 31% of Hindi film collections. While these films boosted numbers, they also highlight the lack of strong homegrown Hindi content.

Hindi-language films had a tough time this year. Original Hindi films saw a sharp 37% drop in collections. Only six films crossed the ₹100 crore mark, down from 16 films in 2023. This downturn suggests a lack of fresh ideas and compelling stories in the Hindi film industry, with audiences turning elsewhere for entertainment.

Footfalls, too, saw a decline. The number of people watching Hindi films dropped by 16%, from 27.5 crore in 2023 to 23 crore in 2024. This decrease points to a growing disengagement with the genre, with more audiences looking towards regional and international films. Pre-pandemic numbers for Hindi cinema were consistently over 30 crore, showing just how much things have changed.

Bollywood’s reliance on big-budget films, or tentpole films, became evident this year. Pushpa 2: The Rule (Hindi) and Stree 2 alone brought in ₹1,587 crore, representing 34% of Hindi cinema’s box office. While these films did well, the lack of strong mid-budget films has left the industry in an unbalanced state.

Only 4 Bollywood Releases In 2024’s Top 10 Indian Films

In 2024, regional industries like Telugu and Malayalam cinema performed better than Hindi films, grabbing larger shares of the box office. Even Hollywood films maintained their presence, attracting niche audiences, further limiting Hindi cinema’s hold.

Bollywood, which had multiple ₹500 crore grossers in 2023, was less successful in 2024. Only one film, Stree 2, managed to surpass ₹500 crore. This year, only four Bollywood films made it into the top 10, with Stree 2 and Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 leading the way.

Here’s a look at the top 10 Indian films of 2024 (in terms of gross collections):

  1. Pushpa 2 – The Rule – ₹1,403 crore
  2. Kalki 2898 AD – ₹776 crore
  3. Stree 2 – ₹740.28 crore
  4. Devara – ₹347 crore
  5. Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 – ₹334.67 crore
  6. Singham Again – ₹316.45 crore
  7. The Greatest Of All Time – ₹305 crore
  8. Amaran – ₹258 crore
  9. Fighter – ₹244.70 crore
  10. HanuMan – ₹240 crore

While Bollywood is still producing big films, the overall picture in 2024 is one of struggle. The industry will need to innovate and reconnect with its audience to regain its former glory.
