In the pre-release biggest shocker of 2025, Housefull 5 has faltered at the first hurdle.
The fifth film of one of the most commercially successful comedy franchises in Bollywood history has only sold 94,750 tickets across the national chains (PVR, Inox, Cinepolis) — that is less than the outright flops, Sikandar and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan.
As a comedy vehicle with a bankable star such as Akshay Kumar, Housefull 5 could not even match the buzz generated by action flops such as BMCM and mid-range thrillers such as Raid 2 and Sikandar.
And on top of it all, Mission Impossible 8, a Hollywood franchise movie, sold 1.65 lakh tickets, which is 75% greater than Housefull 5 (without any pull-of-a-native-language).
What Went Wrong For Housefull 5?
This has been a franchise that has had solid openings throughout its series, known for gross-out humour, mass-appeal ensembles, and festive timing. For Housefull 5 at least, the star-studded ensemble of Akshay Kumar, Riteish Deshmukh, Abhishek Bachchan, and Jacqueline Fernandez did not make a strong connection with the public during the promotional stages.
Key Indicators of the Weak Advance:
- Crowded Release Calendar: Competition with big Hollywood titles and crowded Bollywood schedules.
- Calm Buzz: Even with pushes, the film hasn’t received a lot of pre-release momentum or hot viral moments.
- Franchise Fatigue: They’ve done the fifth one, but audience expectations might adjust, especially when the comedy looks stale.
- Mixed Responses to Teasers & Songs: Some fans appreciated the visual experience, while others considered the comedy ‘recycled’.
National Chains Advance Booking – A Tough Reality Check
Let’s revisit where Housefull 5 finished off versus recent competition:
| Film | Tickets Sold (National Chains) |
|---|---|
| Chhaava | 2,23,000 |
| Mission Impossible 8 | 1,65,000 |
| Sikandar | 1,43,000 |
| Bade Miyan Chote Miyan (2024) | 1,03,000 |
| Housefull 5 | 94,750 |
| Raid 2 | 93,000 |
| GameChanger | 58,000 |
| SkyForce | 52,000 |
| Badass Ravi Kumar | 47,500 (₹149/- offer) |
The truth hurts! As Housefull 5 sits with only a few hours before release, it could possibly be on the verge of a troubling opening unless day-before buzz and spot bookings increase dramatically.
Overseas Market – Is there a silver lining?
Interestingly, whilst India is responding slowly, overseas advance bookings are significantly better than what is being reported in India. The Gulf, the UK and Canada are all showing sustained interest, which is perhaps down to the loyalty of the diaspora to the Housefull franchise and, realistically, Akshay’s overseas box office pull.
Box Office Worldwide Verdict
Housefull 5 can only be salvaged by a miracle and strong word-of-mouth during its opening weekend. The franchise tag, in which the comic nostalgia of the first two Housefull films brought audiences back for family spot bookings, will help — but it is clear: this is the most poorly received opening for a Housefull film ever.
