Hrithik Roshan Said No To Bunty Aur Babli Because Of A ‘Small-Town’ Rule—Super 30 Changed Everything!

Hrithik Roshan once turned down Bunty Aur Babli because of a personal rule against playing small-town characters, a stance he broke only after Super 30.

Bunty Aur Babli emerged two decades ago as a genre-defining box-office hit for Bollywood, but it almost starred an entirely different leading man. In a revealing interview, director Shaad Ali shared that Hrithik Roshan had been offered the role of Bunty, as performed by Abhishek Bachchan, but Hrithik’s personal philosophy back then ruled out this small-town story—until he broke his own rule years later in Super 30.

Hrithik Said No to Small-Town Stories – Until Super 30

Shaad Ali revealed that Hrithik’s father Rakesh Roshan loved the script and wanted Hrithik to do it. “But at that time Hrithik wasn’t very comfortable going into the small-town zone,” he said, adding, “He did a very good job of it in Super 30, though.”

What makes this even more interesting is that Hrithik Roshan not only almost starred in the film but shaped its ending as well. The director gave Hrithik credit for the idea that Bunty and Babli return to conning at the end of the film, rather than finish the story with a law-abiding couple, as had originally been conceived.
“They are like Superman,” Hrithik reportedly said. “You can’t just send them off into the sunset.”

Abhishek Took the Baton, But Hrithik Modified the Blueprint

Even though Hrithik ultimately declined the role, his creative fingerprints were still all over the version of Bunty Aur Babli that we see today. Director Shaad also added that the twist ending that turned Bunty Aur Babli from a good film to an iconic film was a suggestion from Hrithik. And even though Hrithik declined the role at first, he stunned everyone with his transformation into math genius Anand Kumar in Super 30—a neat circle where he accepted the small-town look that he didn’t want before.

Shaad Ali on Bunty Aur Babli 2

Interestingly, Shaad Ali revealed that he has yet to watch Bunty Aur Babli 2.
“There is no reason behind it. I was busy shooting when it released. I will watch it online one day,” he said.

Hrithik Roshan’s New Film: War 2

As there is much to be excited about in the film world, Hrithik Roshan is set to appear in one of the year’s biggest releases: YRF’s War 2, alongside Jr NTR and Kiara Advani. The film is directed by Ayan Mukerji and has set a release date of August 14, 2025, making it the second film in the War universe. The teaser has already created a huge buzz online, and anticipation for another Hrithik hit is building.

Box Office Worldwide Verdict

The story of Hrithik Roshan going from burdensome ‘no’ to remaking his limitations with Super 30 is the actor who goes deeper than mere stardom. Bunty Aur Babli will always remain a significant ‘what if’, but it is clear Hrithik still left his fingerprints on it. With War 2 on the way, Roshan is not just all about superstardom but also about story and is proof that even the ‘no’s crafted legends.
