Every superstar has a story of struggle, and the journey of Shah Rukh Khan is filled with inspiring moments. But one of the most special tales from his early days involves Bollywood’s original “Dream Girl,” Hema Malini. It was Hema Malini who gave SRK his first-ever film offer, and a simple act of kindness from her is what made him fall in love with Mumbai.
This beautiful story shows the humble beginnings of a future king and the gracious nature of a true legend. It’s a reminder that sometimes, a small gesture can change a person’s life forever.
“Hema Ji Combed My Hair”
In an old interview, Shah Rukh Khan recalled how nervous he was when he first met Hema Malini for work. When she mentioned he would have to wear makeup, SRK was clueless. He remembered telling her, “I am a Delhi boy and don’t have much idea about make up.” It was what happened next that stayed with him forever.
SRK shared, “Then Hema ji came to me and combed my hair, that was the day when I decided that I will stay here and will never leave Mumbai.” For a young actor trying to find his place in a new city, that simple, motherly gesture was a sign of acceptance. It was the moment he felt he truly belonged in the film industry.
The Audition That Almost Didn’t Happen
The film Hema Malini was considering him for was her directorial debut, Dil Aashna Hai. However, getting the role wasn’t easy. According to Hema Malini’s biography, Hema Malini: Beyond The Dream Girl, she was not at all satisfied with Shah Rukh’s first audition. He was apparently so nervous that his replies were “breathless” and “incoherent.”
But the Dream Girl saw a spark in him. She gave him another chance, asked him to gel his hair back, and change into a simple t-shirt. The second audition was much better. To be doubly sure, she even called her husband, the legendary Dharmendra, to meet the young actor. Dharam ji instantly took a liking to SRK, and the rest is history.
A Bond That Lasted For Years
Although Hema Malini gave SRK his first break, Dil Aashna Hai was not his debut film. He signed three other movies soon after, and Deewana (1992) was released first, making him an overnight star. But their professional bond continued for years. They later shared screen space in Kamal Haasan’s Hey Ram (2000) and again in the blockbuster Veer Zaara (2004), where Hema Malini played a significant role.
