Fahadh Faasil, currently enjoying acclaim for his latest hit Aavesham, opened up about the shortcomings of his 2023 film Dhoomam, a collaboration with Kannada director Pawan Kumar. In an interview with Onmanorama, the actor candidly admitted that the film faltered because of its concept.
Released on June 23, 2023, in Malayalam and Kannada, Dhoomam aimed to shed light on the tobacco industry’s intricate workings. Faasil clarified that the film wasn’t intended to advocate smoking but rather to raise awareness about the system, particularly highlighting the involvement of the Life Insurance Corporation in tobacco companies.
He stated, “I’m myself a smoker, so I am not the one to tell people they shouldn’t smoke. Dhoomam intended to make people aware of the current system, where a tobacco company is owned 70% by the Life Insurance Corporation. I was surprised with the system. These same companies change prices, launch substitutes and sell cheaper stuff. Sadly, the story of Dhoomam misfired.”
Fahadh Faasil On Dhoomam’s Poor Reception
Addressing the film’s unimpressive reception, Faasil remarked, “Some films will have a good concept, but it is possible that it will not be translated similarly on screen.”
He elaborated, emphasising that certain stories might not fit the cinematic medium as effectively as they do in other formats. “Some things are not meant to be made into cinema. They are beyond people’s understanding,” he added.
