Imtiaz Ali Recalls Rishi Kapoor Being Proud Of Ranbir Kapoor’s Performance In Rockstar, REVEALS Alia Bhatt Wasn’t The 1st Choice For Highway

Imtiaz Ali reminisced about Rishi Kapoor’s proud reaction to Ranbir Kapoor’s performance in Rockstar.

Rockstar remains one of Ranbir Kapoor’s most acclaimed performances, with his portrayal of Janardhan Jakhar (JJ) captivating audiences since its 2011 release. Directed by Imtiaz Ali, the film also featured Nargis Fakhri as the female lead. Kapoor’s performance in the film continues to be celebrated, and his late father, actor Rishi Kapoor, was exceptionally proud of his son’s work.

In a recent chat on Hit List, journalist Mayank Shekhar shared a touching incident about Rishi Kapoor’s reaction to Rockstar.

Imtiaz Ali Recalls Rishi Kapoor’s Reaction To Ranbir In Rockstar

Shekhar recalled receiving multiple calls from Rishi, who was eager to discuss his son’s role. Rishi, delighted by a critic’s review that compared Ranbir’s talent to that of Amitabh Bachchan and Hrithik Roshan, proudly declared, “Beta toh mera hai” (He is my son). This heartfelt assertion underscored Rishi’s pride in Ranbir’s achievements.

Imtiaz Ali, the director of Rockstar, was amused by the story. He also reflected on his experiences working with Rishi Kapoor during the filming of Love Aaj Kal (2009). Ali reminisced about sharing meals with Rishi, who had a unique take on food preferences, including a humorous belief that chicken wasn’t a true non-vegetarian dish.

Not Alia Bhatt, Aishwarya Rai Was Initial Choice For Highway

In another interview with Midday, Ali also discussed his casting choices and personal reflections in the interview. He mentioned his initial reluctance to cast a younger actress, but meeting Alia Bhatt changed his perspective. Ali found Bhatt’s emotional depth compelling, which led him to realise that age was secondary to the depth of performance he sought.

He admitted that while he thought Aishwarya Rai could be a great fit for a role in his project, he never pursued it further.

Coming back to Rockstar, it was both a commercial and critical success, featuring a strong ensemble cast including Aditi Rao Hydari, Piyush Mishra, Shernaz Patel, Kumud Mishra, Sanjana Sanghi, Aakash Dahiya, and Shammi Kapoor. Kapoor’s performance in the film marked a significant milestone in his career, cementing his reputation as one of Bollywood’s leading actors.
