After Love And War, Sanjay Leela Bhansali And Alia Bhatt Revisit Inshallah With A New Twist

Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Alia Bhatt have reopened the conversation around Inshallah, giving one of Hindi cinema’s most discussed unfinished projects a fresh burst of momentum. The film is back in development as a reworked version of the romance that was first announced in 2019, placing the focus on a new screenplay rather than a simple return to the earlier plan.

Inshallah Is Being Reworked

The current development centers on Bhansali reshaping Inshallah while retaining the emotional spine of the original idea. The project was announced in 2019 with Salman Khan and Alia Bhatt, but it did not move ahead in that form. Soon after, Bhansali Productions issued a public clarification on social media stating that Inshallah had been delayed, while adding that Bhansali would be back with another film soon.

The revived version now on the table is being developed with substantial writing changes. Instead of reviving the shelved film scene for scene, the filmmaker is reworking the material with a new creative approach. That puts the emphasis squarely on how the love story is being rebuilt for the present moment, and it also explains why the project has re-entered conversation with renewed interest.

Casting Will Follow The Script

Casting discussions remain secondary to the screenplay. Shah Rukh Khan’s name has circulated in connection with the project in recent months, but the film’s male lead has not been locked. The immediate priority is finalising the rewritten material before Bhansali moves to the next stage.

That approach is consistent with the filmmaker’s long-established process. On a Bhansali film, the writing drives the casting, not the other way around. For Inshallah, that means the eventual male lead will depend on the age, texture and dramatic register of the updated script. The rework also opens the door to a different screen dynamic from the one first imagined when the film was announced seven years ago.

Where Love And War Fits In

The timing of this development is especially striking because Bhansali and Bhatt are already in the middle of another major collaboration. Love and War stars Alia Bhatt alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal, and the film has been widely listed for a March 20, 2026 release before later moving ahead in production timelines.

That active creative partnership gives the Inshallah rethink added weight. Bhatt remains one of Bhansali’s most important collaborators of this phase, and the decision to revisit Inshallah now signals that the director still sees dramatic value in the story he once set aside.

Alia Bhatt’s Recent And Upcoming Work

Bhatt’s most recent release was Jigra in 2024, directed by Vasan Bala. Before that, she headlined Karan Johar’s theatrical success Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in 2023 opposite Ranveer Singh, and made her Hollywood debut the same year with Netflix’s Heart of Stone, co-starring Gal Gadot and Jamie Dornan. Her next confirmed big-screen outing remains Love and War, keeping her firmly in the centre of high-profile Hindi film storytelling as Inshallah returns to the table.
