Pippa, the highly-anticipated war drama starring Ishaan Khatter, which was earlier deferred from its theatrical release, is now reportedly set for a direct-to-digital premiere. As per a report in Mid-Day, the makers are exploring an OTT release due to producer Ronnie Screwvala’s legal battle with four national multiplex chains over anti-competitive collusion related to the undue imposition of Virtual Print Fee (VPF).
Screwvala, who is producing the film with Siddharth Roy Kapur, had earlier petitioned the Competition Commission of India (CCI) against multiplexes imposing VPF charges of Rs 20,000 for every film screened at every property. Though CCI had noted that the producer couldn’t prove his allegations at the time, the dealings between the producer and the multiplex chains didn’t go down well.
Pippa is based on the book ‘The Burning Chaffees’ by Brigadier Balram Singh Mehta and has been scored by Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman. The film is a heroic tank battle drama that highlights the bravery of Brigadier Mehta, a veteran of the 45th Cavalry tank squadron, who fought on the eastern front during the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971. The film’s central focus is the amphibious war tank named “Pippa,” which was instrumental in India’s victory in the war.
The film stars Ishaan Khatter, Mrunal Thakur, Priyanshu Painyuli, and Soni Razdan and is produced by RSVP and Roy Kapur Films. The makers are reportedly satisfied with how the project has turned out and are now planning for a digital release soon. The film’s earlier release date was December 2, 2022.
