‘It Breaks My Heart’ Says Neeraj Ghaywan: Director Defends Karan Johar Over ‘Homebound’ Backlash

The director of the critically acclaimed film Homebound, Neeraj Ghaywan, has spoken out in defence of his producer, Karan Johar. Karan recently faced a lot of criticism online for his remarks about the profitability of filmmaking, which many felt were aimed at their film Homebound.

Neeraj expressed that he was “disturbed” by the backlash and clarified that Karan’s statements were taken completely out of context. He strongly defended the producer, explaining that Karan supported the film for its story, not for making money.

Neeraj Ghaywan Says KJo’s Comments Were Flipped

In a recent interview, Neeraj shared his disappointment over the whole situation. He said, “To see people questioning his honesty and casting aspersions on him really breaks my heart.” He explained that Karan Johar was fully aware that a sensitive film like Homebound wouldn’t be a box office blockbuster, but he backed it because the story touched him emotionally.

Neeraj is worried that if a big producer like Karan Johar is criticized for supporting smaller, meaningful films, it will discourage others from doing the same in the future. “If we continue to react this way, it will only break their spirit, and such films won’t be made,” he stated, urging people to understand the producer’s business perspective.

What Was The Controversy About?

The issue started when Karan Johar, in an interview, said that with his new business partnerships, every decision has to be looked at from a profitability angle. He mentioned Homebound‘s critical success but then said, “I can’t say if I’ll take such decisions in the future or not.” This comment led to many on social media accusing him of choosing commerce over art.

Following the backlash, Karan posted a note on Instagram clarifying his stance. He wrote that he is “exceptionally proud” of Homebound and asked people not to misquote his comments, which were made during a discussion on the business of movies.
