Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 has landed in the middle of an ugly theatre controversy in Tamil Nadu after a film song played while the National Flag appeared on screen before a show in Karur. The moment, captured by moviegoers and widely circulated online on Thursday, October 23, 2026, quickly turned a routine screening into a flashpoint, with viewers condemning the lapse as deeply disrespectful.
Viral Video Triggers Backlash
The incident took place at Ajantha Ellora Cinemas on Coimbatore Road in Karur during a screening of Jailer 2. Before the film began, the National Flag appeared on screen, but instead of Jana Gana Mana, the auditorium heard a commercial song. Videos from inside the theatre spread rapidly across social media, where the screening error drew sharp criticism and intensified the conversation around basic exhibition protocol.
The backlash gathered pace because the moment unfolded in a setting where audiences expect solemnity and precision. With the clip circulating widely, the controversy soon moved beyond a local theatre error and became a talking point among Rajinikanth fans and filmgoers across platforms.
Jailer 2 Remains A Major Box Office Force
The row has erupted at a time when Jailer 2 is already commanding enormous attention at the box office. Directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and produced by Sun Pictures, the film released worldwide on October 15, 2026. The sequel reunites Nelson with Rajinikanth after Jailer and features S. J. Suryah, Vidya Balan, Mithun Chakraborty, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Ramya Krishnan, Yogi Babu and Mirnaa Menon. Music for the film has been composed by Anirudh Ravichander.
An action comedy set in the world of “Tiger” Muthuvel Pandian, Jailer 2 has emerged as one of the biggest Tamil theatrical events of 2026. Its scale, star power and commercial run have ensured that every development around the film is being watched closely.
A Separate Jailer 2 Screening Dispute Surfaced In Canada
This is not the only exhibition-related issue to hit the film’s run. In Canada, York Cinemas halted screenings of Jailer 2 and issued an official statement explaining the disruption. The exhibitor said, “Although York Cinemas has fulfilled all required financial commitments and payments, the valid KDMs (Key Delivery Messages) required to continue screening the film have not been provided by the North American distributors, Shloka Entertainments and Prathyangira Cinemas, following the required authorization from the production company, Sun Pictures.”
Rajinikanth’s Recent And Upcoming Work
The controversy has once again placed Rajinikanth at the centre of a film conversation far bigger than the screen itself. In recent years, the superstar appeared in Lal Salaam in 2024 in an extended role, followed by Vettaiyan later that year. He then headlined Coolie in 2025 before returning as Muthuvel Pandian in Jailer 2 in 2026. His next confirmed film is Dharman, which is currently in production, while his much-discussed reunion project with Kamal Haasan remains in pre-production.
