Jana Nayagan: Vijay Allows Five Shows In Tamil Nadu As Release Push Gathers Steam

Vijay’s long-delayed Jana Nayagan has returned to the spotlight with a major theatre policy shift in Tamil Nadu. On May 25, 2026, the actor turned Tamil Nadu Chief Minister issued an order permitting theatres across the state to screen five shows a day for newly released Tamil films, a move that arrives just as the industry is tracking the release path of his pending film.

The decision marks a notable change for Tamil Nadu’s regulated exhibition model. Under the Tamil Cinema Regulation Rules, 1957, theatres were earlier allowed four scheduled shows a day, with an additional special show cleared only on festive or government holidays.

Vijay Allows Five Shows In Tamil Nadu

The new order allows new Tamil films to run five shows daily for seven days from their release date. For big star vehicles, this expands opening week capacity in a market where the first week often defines the commercial conversation.

The timing has drawn attention because Jana Nayagan has been awaiting release after missing its original January 9, 2026 date. The film has faced censor and legal hurdles, and its theatrical plans have remained under close watch since Vijay took office earlier this month.

Earlier this year, Canadian distributor York Cinemas had addressed ticket holders after the film’s delay, stating, “Dear Patrons, please note that the movie Jana Nayagan will not be releasing before April 30. If you have any pending tickets and your refund has not yet been processed, kindly contact our theatres to have it arranged at the earliest.”

What Jana Nayagan Brings To The Screen

Jana Nayagan is directed by H. Vinoth and produced by KVN Productions, with Venkat K. Narayana backing the film. The Tamil political action thriller stars Vijay alongside Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain and Priyamani.

The film is positioned as Vijay’s final screen appearance before his full-time political career. Its premise is built around a mass political action space, with Vijay’s character framed as a people-facing leader figure, a theme that has gained fresh resonance after his real-life political rise.

Vijay’s Recent And Upcoming Work

Vijay’s recent theatrical run has remained among the strongest in Tamil cinema. In 2023, he starred in Varisu, directed by Vamshi Paidipally, and Leo, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj. Leo became the highest-grossing film of his career and strengthened his pan-Indian box office standing.

In 2024, Vijay headlined The Greatest of All Time, directed by Venkat Prabhu, where he played dual roles. His confirmed next release remains Jana Nayagan, which has completed production but is awaiting a fresh release pathway after its postponement. With the five-show order now in place, the film is set to become one of Tamil cinema’s most closely tracked theatrical events of the year.
