Janhvi Kapoor is not mincing words about the darker side of social media, especially when it crosses the line into cruelty. In a recent interview, the actor spoke candidly about the trolling her brother Arjun Kapoor faces online, and made it clear that she does not see any room for excuses when criticism turns into bullying.
What makes Janhvi’s stance land harder is its clarity. She does not frame it as a celebrity inconvenience, but as a culture problem, where outrage is packaged and monetised, and public figures become easy targets in the race for engagement.
The Latest Update
Speaking while reflecting on social media culture, Janhvi said she has seen the hate directed at Arjun turn ugly. “Of course, it hurts to feel misunderstood or when it turns into bullying and harassment, the way I’ve seen happen with my brother sometimes and there’s no excuse for that kind of behaviour. Negativity fuels negativity and you just have to remove yourself from it,” she said.
Janhvi also broke down why she believes so much of the online noise is less personal than it feels in the moment, and more about the economics of attention. “From what I understand about social media culture, is that everyone wants prominence, views and virality, so if they are making content about you, you’re just a scapegoat, they’re just using your name for clickbait, rage bait and whatever else it is to further their engagement,” she said.
She added that once you view it through that lens, it becomes easier to not internalise the hate. “That’s the only purpose you serve, and once you look at it from that lens, you understand that what they’re saying about you has nothing to do with you. Then you start taking that less to your heart,” Janhvi said.
The remarks resonate in an industry that increasingly lives in the comment section, where narratives can be shaped in minutes, and the cost of viral content is often borne by the person being discussed.
