John Abraham officially begins filming for Rohit Shetty’s upcoming biopic on top cop Rakesh Maria.

Bollywood action star John Abraham has officially taken on the legendary role of Rakesh Maria, the famed Mumbai Police policeman, as production begins on Rohit Shetty’s next film based on one of India’s real crime stories.

Earlier last week, a short behind-the-scenes glimpse was shared on Instagram, featuring John totally in character in a cop costume and sunglasses, bravely walking—evoking the iconic IPS officer.

Rakesh Maria Biopic: What We Know

This untitled project, directed by Shetty, is an adaptation of the published memoir Let Me Say It Now, written by Rakesh Maria himself. John Abraham stars as Rakesh Maria, chronicling his rise through the ranks of the Mumbai Police force to head of the crime branch, investigating some of the most high-profile cases in the absence of sufficient evidence, including the 1993 Bombay blasts, the 26/11 attacks, and the questioning of Ajmal Kasab.

Though the short clip film posted circulating Instagram confirms that production has started, a title and official release date are yet to be announced.

John-Rohit Collaboration That Fans Never Expected

Rohit Shetty is known for the larger-than-life stunts in his high-octane entertainers set in a fictional universe of Indian fictional cops, but for the first time, he will anchor the outrageousness of his own style in the lives of real people when he turns to serious crime drama.

For John Abraham, who last dazzled audiences with his brief but memorable performance in Pathaan, this is the return to believable, intense performances that merge patriotism with realism. Reports indicate that the biopic will offer thrilling procedural sequences while also allowing Maria’s emotional and ethical dilemmas to resonate, creating more than just a record of a cop’s working life.

BoxOfficeWorldwide Verdict

John Abraham’s intense physical transformation as Rakesh Maria heralds a strong change for both the actor and Rohit Shetty. Based on true events and already generating buzz from one short glimpse from on set relating to the project, it has the potential to be an engaging procedural thriller based on Indian reality.
