In a recent press interaction held in Abu Dhabi, actor-politician Kamal Haasan voiced his concerns regarding the controversial film, The Kerala Story. During the discussion, he raised questions about the movie’s credibility and appeared to label it as a work of propaganda. Haasan expressed that simply claiming a film to be based on a “true story” was insufficient, emphasizing the necessity for the narrative to genuinely reflect reality.
Addressing the gathered journalists, Haasan stated, “I have consistently voiced my opposition towards propagandist films. Merely inscribing ‘true story’ at the bottom as a logo does not suffice. It is imperative for a film to genuinely depict the truth, which is not the case with The Kerala Story.”
The Kerala Story Controversy

The film The Kerala Story, directed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, has faced significant controversy ever since the release of its first trailer. The trailer made a bold assertion that more than 30,000 women from Kerala had been radicalized by Islamic fundamentalists. However, prominent politicians raised concerns about the accuracy of this statistic, prompting the filmmakers to revise their claim. They later stated that the story drew inspiration from the experiences of three specific women, rather than representing a broader demographic. Later data was changed from 30,000 to 32 and then to meagre number 3.
Box Office Success And Release Of The Kerala Story
Upon its release, The Kerala Story stirred up a considerable amount of controversy. While Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed support for the film and mentioned it during an election rally in Karnataka on its release day, the West Bengal government took a different stance and banned its screening. However, in a few states like Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, the film was granted tax-free status. In recent weeks, The Kerala Story has proven to be a commercial success, amassing over Rs 225 crore at box office in India and securing the position of the second-highest-grossing film of the year, just behind Pathaan.
Adah Sharma, Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani, and Sonia Balani are the lead actors in The Kerala Story. The film, much like Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files last year, found itself embroiled in controversy, with critics labeling it as propaganda. However, despite these claims, both films managed to achieve significant success at the box office, defying the criticisms and garnering considerable attention.
