Kangana Ranaut is currently promoting her directorial debut Emergency. The actress recently shared why she rejected the role that Deepika Padukone later played in Padmaavat.
During her recent conversation with Abhijeet Bharti, she explained her decision and how she found the role “irrelevant.”
Kangana Ranaut Was Approached For Padmaavat ‘Without Script’
Kangana recalled being offered the part in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film. She asked for the script to read, but Bhansali is known for not sharing scripts with actors.
Instead, Kangana inquired about the heroine’s role, and Bhansali told her that the character was mostly “just getting ready” throughout the film. After watching Padmaavat, Kangana agreed with his statement.
She shared, “I was also offered Padmaavat. So, I said, ‘Sir (Sanjay Leela Bhansali), if I could get the script of your film, it would be great.’ To this, he replied, ‘I never give scripts.’ Then I asked, ‘What is the heroine’s role?’ He said, ‘The heroine’s role is simply that the hero sees her for the first time in a mirror while she’s getting ready.’ When I watched the film, I realized that the heroine is indeed just getting ready throughout the movie, and he was right.”

The clip of Kangana’s remarks quickly went viral, and many Reddit users shared their agreement. One comment said, “Umm, apart from her dance and the final scene, she is indeed only getting ready in the entire movie.” Another user praised Kangana’s bold honesty, saying, “Gotta love Kangana’s savage analytical skills.”
Others supported her viewpoint and said, “She’s actually not wrong. Aside from the last scene, Deepika pretty much only spent the entire movie ‘getting dressed’ and exchanging looks with Shahid.”

Padmaavat, based on the epic poem by Malik Muhammad Jayasi, was a huge success. Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, it featured Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, and Shahid Kapoor. The film grossed Rs 302 crore worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of 2018.
Meanwhile, Kangana continues to focus on her directorial venture, Emergency. The biographical drama, which explores the life of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, stars Kangana in the lead role. Released on January 17, the film also features Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, and Satish Kaushik in key roles.
