As the eagerly awaited film Emergency prepares for its nationwide release on January 17, 2025, a fresh controversy has sparked in Punjab. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has called for a ban on the movie in the state, expressing concerns over its portrayal of Sikh history and the feelings of the Sikh community.
Directed and co-produced by BJP MP Kangana Ranaut, the film stars her as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. However, the SGPC argues that the movie distorts key historical events, especially the 1984 attacks on Sikh shrines.
SGPC Calls For Ban On Kangana Ranaut’s Emergency Ahead Of Release
In a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami condemned the film & called it a “calculated attempt to distort history and harm Sikh sentiments.”
The SGPC claims that Emergency inaccurately portrays the attacks on important Sikh sites like Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) and Sri Akal Takht Sahib, as well as the broader Sikh genocide.
The letter further argues that the film downplays the truth and promotes an anti-Sikh agenda, fuelling hatred towards the community. The committee also voiced concerns about the portrayal of Sikh martyr Sant Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale, accusing the film of defaming his character.
This isn’t the first time the SGPC has raised objections. They had previously approached Punjab’s Chief Secretary with their concerns, but the committee expressed frustration over the state government’s inaction. The SGPC has now taken the matter further, sending requests to Deputy Commissioners across Punjab to block the film’s release in the state.
“If the film releases on January 17, 2025, it will naturally evoke anger and protests within the Sikh community. The Punjab government must take responsibility to ensure the movie is not released in the state. Otherwise, the SGPC will be compelled to launch strong protests across Punjab,” the letter states.
Emergency has already faced delays. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) initially required several cuts after Sikh groups raised concerns about its depiction of the community. Even though the CBFC has certified the film, the SGPC is adamant that its release could cause significant unrest.
