Kangana Ranaut‘s career has had its fair share of highs and lows. Known for her powerful roles and acting versatility, she’s been through a rough patch at the box office recently. As her new film Emergency is set to release on January 17, 2025, the question is that can this film bring her back into the spotlight?
Kangana has had big successes in the past, like Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015), which earned Rs 150.8 crore, and Queen (2014), which grossed Rs 61 crore. These films helped her establish herself in the industry. However, her more recent releases haven’t done as well.
Kangana’s Recent Box Office Failures
In 2023, Tejas, where she played an Air Force pilot, only made Rs 4.14 crore, a big disappointment. Her action-packed film Dhaakad (2022) earned just Rs 3 crore. Even Thalaivii (2021), a biographical drama about Jayalalithaa, failed to make a mark, bringing in only Rs 1.46 crore.
Other films like Panga (2020) and Judgementall Hai Kya (2019) didn’t perform as expected either, despite positive reviews. Her earlier movie Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (2019) did a bit better, earning Rs 92.19 crore, but it was still considered just an average success.
Despite these setbacks, Emergency has the potential to change the game for Kangana. The film delves into a key moment in Indian history – the Emergency declared by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975. Not only does Kangana play the role of the iconic leader, but she also directs the film, showcasing her skills beyond acting.
The movie’s historical and political themes make it relevant and potentially appealing to those interested in India’s past.
Will Emergency Become Her Box Office Saviour?
Kangana has shown her strength in roles like Queen and Manikarnika, and if she delivers another strong performance in Emergency, it could remind audiences of her range as an actor. Her polarising image only adds to the intrigue around how she will portray such a powerful figure like Indira Gandhi.
The timing of the release could work in the film’s favour. With a January release, Emergency won’t face stiff competition from big festive blockbusters, giving it room to stand out. Strong marketing could also help create buzz around the film.
That said, Kangana still faces challenges. Recent films have struggled due to weak scripts and a lack of mainstream appeal. Her polarising image could also affect her audience reach.
For Emergency to succeed, it will need positive reviews and word-of-mouth to draw in viewers. In today’s film landscape, big-budget spectacles and franchises often dominate, making it harder for a political drama to make an impact.
For Kangana, Emergency is more than just another movie—it’s a chance to make a comeback. If the film does well, it could mark a new phase in her career. It would show that she still has what it takes to lead major films in Bollywood.
