Ram Charan’s Game Changer Becomes 7th Highest First-Day Grosser In AP & Telangana But Numbers Are Still Average

Game Changer earned Rs 43 cr on its first day & became the 7th highest opener in AP & Telangana. However, the numbers feel underwhelming given the recent ticket price hikes and high expectations.

Ram Charan’s much-anticipated Game Changer had a solid opening, raking in approximately Rs. 43 crore on its first day in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. While the film secured the seventh-highest first-day collection in the history of the twin states, the numbers aren’t as stellar when you add the right context.

Game Changer Telugu Box Office Boosted By Rising Ticket Prices & Regional Fluctuations

Recent trends in the Telugu film industry show a dramatic surge in first-day box office collections, largely driven by soaring ticket prices. Telangana, in particular, saw ticket prices double in 2021, which gave a significant boost to opening-day collections.

However, Andhra Pradesh introduced stricter regulations, keeping ticket prices and collections relatively flat compared to pre-COVID days. As a result, Telangana’s ticket sales surged, compensating for Andhra Pradesh’s slower growth, and this trend continued through 2022 and 2023.

But everything changed last year. With the regime shift in Andhra Pradesh, ticket price regulations were relaxed, allowing for higher ticket hikes and extra shows. This shift sparked a boom in first-day collections. Big-budget films like Devara and Pushpa 2 benefited from this, crossing Rs. 60 crore and Rs. 80 crore respectively on opening day. Many experts believe a Baahubali or RRR film could now easily aim for Rs. 100 crore on day one.

Film’s Rs 43 Cr Opening Falls Short Compared To Recent Blockbusters

Against this backdrop, Game Changer’s Rs. 43 crore opening looks rather underwhelming. It might seem decent on the surface, but when compared to the recent performances of big-ticket films, it doesn’t hold up well.

Even last year’s Guntur Kaaram matched this figure but with much higher occupancy rates. Game Changer only managed around 45-50% occupancy, which doesn’t bode well for its future.

Looking at the rankings of first-day box office collections in AP and Telangana, Game Changer comes in at seventh place, trailing behind blockbusters like Pushpa: The Rule (Rs. 80.5 crore), RRR (Rs. 77.5 crore), and Devara (Rs. 65 crore). The full list includes the following:

  1. Pushpa: The Rule – Rs. 80.5 crore (2024)
  2. RRR – Rs. 77.5 crore (2022)
  3. Devara – Rs. 65 crore (2024)
  4. Kalki 2898 AD – Rs. 57.25 crore (2024)
  5. Salaar – Rs. 55 crore (2023)
  6. Baahubali: The Conclusion – Rs. 44.75 crore (2017)
  7. Game Changer – Rs. 43 crore (2024)
  8. Guntur Kaaram – Rs. 42.5 crore (2023)
  9. Saaho – Rs. 40.75 crore (2019)
  10. Syeraa Narasimha Reddy – Rs. 39 crore (2019)

One major factor contributing to this modest opening is the rise in ticket prices. While it has boosted initial collections, the downside is low occupancy.

Films that would’ve once filled theatres at 70-80% are now struggling to fill seats, with many films barely hitting 50%. Even big blockbusters like Pushpa 2 weren’t immune to this, as the hype fades post-opening day. Game Changer saw this issue first-hand, with morning show occupancy plummeting to a mere 20%.

For Game Changer, it’s not all bad news. The film still has the potential to pick up steam if it finds its rhythm. However, its opening signals that the ticket price hike might not always work in favour, especially when hype fails to meet expectations. The next few days will tell if it can recover or if it’s destined for a steep drop-off at the box office.
