Karan Johar Files Lawsuit Against Unauthorised Use Of His Name In Film Title, Seeks Urgent Injunction

Karan Johar takes legal action against the unauthorised use of his name in the film title, citing infringement on his personal rights.

Director-producer Karan Johar has reportedly taken legal action against the creators of the upcoming Hindi movie Shaadi Ke Director Karan aur Johar. Johar, a prominent figure in the Indian film industry, filed a petition in the Bombay High Court seeking an urgent injunction against the film’s release, scheduled for June 14.

With the film just a day away from hitting theatres, Johar is not only seeking a temporary stay on its distribution but also a permanent injunction against the unauthorised use of his name in any context related to the movie.

In his plea, The RARKPK director emphasised the necessity of preventing the unauthorized use of his name in the film’s title, arguing that such usage directly infringes upon his personal rights, including his rights to privacy and publicity. He firmly clarified that he has no involvement whatsoever with the movie or its creators. 

Karan Johar also explained in his complaint that this is blatant exploitation of his ‘brand name’ without consent, which undermines his hard-earned reputation and goodwill in the industry.

The urgency of the matter is underscored by the fact that promotional materials, including trailers and posters, are already in circulation on various platforms, including social media.

In an official statement reported by India Today, the suit read, “These trailers and posters have caused and are continuing to cause irreparable loss and damage to the goodwill and reputation of Johar. Further, such a release of the film with the title containing his brand name ‘Karan Johar,’ together or in parts, will cause irreparable loss and damage to the goodwill and reputation which he has gained after investing huge amounts of time, effort, and money.”

Justice RI Chagla’s bench has agreed to hold a hearing on June 13, Thursday, a day prior to the release of the film.
