Karan Johar still remembers the sting of Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna. Twenty years after the film triggered one of the most heated conversations around love and marriage in mainstream Hindi cinema, the filmmaker is revisiting that world through Nazdeekiyan, the new long-form adaptation that has pushed his 2006 drama back into the spotlight.
The Backlash Karan Johar Has Never Forgotten
Johar did not dilute what the film’s reception felt like when he reflected on it in a recent interview with The Week. “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, we are adapting it into a long-form series. It was released in 2006 to very polarised responses. I had many people come up to me and ask me whether I was unwell after that film because they said, ‘How can you endorse infidelity?’ And I was like, ‘How can you endorse something that’s already sold out?’.”
The sharper blow, however, came from home. Recalling his mother Hiroo Johar’s reaction, he said, “She was silent after KANK. She walked out and didn’t say anything. One week later, she asked me, ‘Can you explain why you had to be so extreme with the subject?’ I said it’s my belief. She said I won’t say anything. But when I saw it, I got very scared. That’s what she said. She’s very honest with me.” He has also described her as his “conscience” and “biggest critic,” which makes that silence after the screening all the more telling.
That reaction at home echoed the larger mood around the film when it arrived on August 11, 2006. Directed by Johar and produced under Dharma Productions, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna starred Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Preity Zinta, and Kirron Kher in a story about two unhappily married people whose emotional intimacy turns into an extramarital relationship. The subject invited fierce debate, but the film also found a strong audience and finished with a worldwide gross of ₹113 crore, while becoming the highest-grossing Indian film in overseas markets at the time.
Why Nazdeekiyan Feels Like A Full Circle Moment
That history gives Nazdeekiyan an added charge. Rather than simply repackaging a familiar title, the series feels like Johar returning to an emotional space that has long interested him, with more room to explore its complications. Announced as part of Prime Video India’s 2026 slate, Nazdeekiyan is produced by Dharmatic Entertainment and stars Taha Shah Badussha, Nikita Dutta, Paresh Pahuja, and Aakanksha Singh, with Ruchir Arun directing.
Johar’s last directorial release, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in 2023, also showed his instinct for packaging emotional conflict inside glossy mainstream storytelling. With Nazdeekiyan, he appears ready to revisit one of his most provocative relationship dramas in a format that can linger longer on discomfort, desire, and consequence.
