Karan Johar has pressed play on two of his most talked about worlds at once, his gossip magnet chat show and one of his most divisive films. In a surprise double reveal, the filmmaker confirmed that Koffee with Karan will return with Season 9 this Diwali, while his 2006 relationship drama Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna is being reimagined as a long form web series.
It is the kind of update only Johar could deliver, part pop culture event, part emotional reckoning. One announcement leans into the sharp, insider energy that made Koffee with Karan a celebrity ritual. The other revisits a film that pushed mainstream Hindi cinema into uncomfortable territory, and never stopped dividing audiences over love, marriage, and infidelity. Put together, the news feels like Johar revisiting both the spectacle and the sensitivity that have defined his career.
Why Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna Is Finding New Life On Streaming
In his interview with The Week, Johar spoke candidly about why Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna is now being adapted for the streaming space. “We’re actually adapting it into a long-form series. The root of that film, it was, of course, released in 2006 to very polarised responses,” he said.
He also looked back at the backlash the film drew at the time. “I had many people come up to me and ask me whether I was unwell after that film, because they said, ‘How can you endorse infidelity?’” The line neatly sums up the discomfort the film triggered on release, when its emotional and moral ambiguity felt far more unsettling to mainstream viewers than Johar’s plush romantic worlds usually did.
One audience memory he shared still captures that resistance with almost cinematic precision. “I still remember when I was watching the film with an audience a day prior to its release. There was a very traditional couple watching the film, and there’s a moment where Shah Rukh and Rani check into a hotel room. The lady, she had come with her husband, turned dramatically to him, and he very calmly said, ‘It’s a dream sequence.’ After five minutes, they realised it was not a dream sequence, and then they got up and left.”
Johar also confirmed that the series is already in the works for a platform. “So we’re doing a series, a long-form show for a platform, which I’m not able to give you too many details about right now, but it will be out soon.”
How The Diwali Return Of Koffee With Karan Reframes Johar’S Next Phase
If the streaming update taps into Johar the provocateur, the Diwali reveal brings back Johar the ringmaster of Bollywood conversation. In the same interview, he confirmed the return of his celebrity talk show with a crisp tease: “This year, Diwali, season 9.”
That festive timing gives Koffee with Karan an especially buzzy runway. For years, the show has operated as more than a couch conversation format, it is where star equations, industry hierarchies, and off screen chemistry are turned into prime time entertainment.
His company Dharma Productions also gearing up for multiple releases this year including Chand Mera Dil next month.
