Filmmaker Karan Johar recently talked about his late father, Yash Johar, during the debut episode of comedian Zakir Khan’s new show, Aapka Apna Zakir. Johar discussed the challenges his father faced in the film industry and the impact it had on him.
Karan Johar Talks About Yash Johar’s Film Suffering Losses
On the show, Karan revealed his feelings about predicting the success of his films. In Hindi, he said, “I never felt as if I have killed it or that my film will be a huge box office success. I feel like I will incur losses and I will come on the streets; because at the end of the day, I am a son of a producer.”
He shared how his father, Yash Johar, had taken a significant loan to produce his first film, Dostana. Despite its success, many of Yash’s subsequent projects faced setbacks.
KJo Recalls A Moment When His Father Felt Disrespected In The Industry
Karan also recalled a moment and said, “We were invited to premieres but were given really substandard seats. So my father wouldn’t go, but he would ask me to attend. I saw that pain in his eyes of why was he invited when he couldn’t be respected. Failure is a bitter pill to swallow. When films flop, your failure is announced loudly, and it was tough to see him go through that.”
He added, “He would have been very happy to see where Dharma is today. I feel sad that he left us so soon and only saw 5-6 years of my journey. My biggest regret is that he wasn’t around when it was in its best phase.”
Yash Johar, who passed away on June 26, 2004, at the age of 75, was a notable producer and founder of Dharma Productions in 1976. After his death, Karan Johar took over the family production house.
Under Karan’s leadership, Dharma Productions has become a significant force in Bollywood, with recent releases like Bad Newz continuing the legacy of innovation and success.
