Filmmaker Karan Johar, who has collaborated with Shah Rukh Khan on several projects, has opened up about why he did not approach the superstar for a cameo appearance in his latest directorial, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani. The film, starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles, released to positive reviews from critics and audiences.
Karan Johar reveals he had a perfect idea for Shah Rukh’s appearance
In an exclusive interview with Pinkvilla, Karan Johar said that he had a perfect idea for Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol to make a special appearance in the film, but he did not have the courage to ask them. He said that his assistant directors suggested that in the song Tum Kya Mile, the camera should pan away from Ranveer and Alia and focus on Shah Rukh and Kajol, who would be singing the same song. He said that this would show Alia’s character the true meaning of love, as Shah Rukh and Kajol represent love in Indian cinema.
However, Karan Johar decided to drop the idea, as he felt that he could not take advantage of Shah Rukh Khan’s generosity and friendship. He recalled how Shah Rukh Khan agreed to do a massive and impactful cameo in Brahmastra, another film produced by Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions, without charging any fee. He said that Shah Rukh Khan gave him nearly 12-14 days of his time and energy for Brahmastra, and he could not ask him to do another cameo so soon.

Karan Johar also revealed that Shah Rukh Khan never says no to him, and he has to be careful about what he asks for. He said that he was grateful for Shah Rukh Khan’s support and contribution to his films, such as Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, where he also did cameos. He said that Shah Rukh Khan is king-hearted as well as king-sized.
Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is a romantic comedy that also features Dharmendra, Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi and Rajesh Khanna in pivotal roles. The film is about two contrasting families who come together for a wedding. The film has been praised for its humour, music, performances and direction. The film is streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Karan Johar bowed down to Shah Rukh Khan while praising him at a special silver jubilee screening of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.
“I bow down to the man himself, the biggest movie star of this world. I remember the day Jawan released, I said ‘Okay, now we are done with King, now we are officially Emperor.’ To the emperor of entertainment and the Queen of so many hearts, I am so grateful,” Karan Johar said.
Karan and Shah Rukh have worked together on films such as Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, My Name Is Khan and a cameo appearance in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil. They both have also produced films like Dear Zindagi and Ittefaq together.
